Situation Room: Sky Dweller Two-tone vs Daytona
Oh wise ones!
Situation: I am in a strange situation with 2 of my (in the list) watches. In both of these cases, i believe i am lucky but not "trending" lucky, so leaning on to this forum for advise. I received a call from the AD about the availability of a SD - reference 326933 - two-tone with champagne face, in the next day or two. I am also in the wait list with them for a Daytona, the likelihood of them receiving the Daytona in gold with black face is higher than the usually sought after ones. Background: I am not particular about the stainless steel, white face on a Daytona (or) blue on SD etc and quite comfortable with the couple of yellow & rose gold that i have. With these inputs and from the view of a Rolex collector (I am saying this because i am NOT looking at buying these watches for their commercial value or to flip/sell), what would be your recommendations? The question: Which one should i go as the FIRST priority -- the Two-tone gold face SD (or) the two-tone black face Daytona? If you have read till here, Thank you for your time!! |

Welcome to the forum
I’m not sure I understand the question, but if you are interested in both references, I’d buy the first one they have to offer. |

Thank you Brian! Sorry for the longish question. The SD is coming off available in a day or two, the Daytona is potentially a couple of weeks out. If i had to prioritize for this round, which one would be a recommendation? Given that both are the less popular watch faces/materials.....wanted to check from the group. Thank you again!!

Hard call. Because just because they think you are a couple of weeks out for the Daytona, it might turn out differrently. Agree with Brian. So, if I liked and would wear them both, I would grab the first one available.

For me, Daytona is just so much more comfortable. Both great options and can’t go wrong either way if you want both, so I can see the reasoning of take whichever is offered.

Oh, and popularity with others would not enter the picture for me. Your taste is your taste.

Can you buy both ?
The Daytona would be harder to come by I think a tt sky dweller will come around again sooner. |

Daytona. I love the look and complication (annual calendar) of the SKD, but the thickness is an issue for me.

I like the thought of buying both if possible. If not, I think it comes down to which you prefer and if it is equal then the one offered first. The Sky-Dweller is a very cool watch but the Daytona is an Icon. You have good taste and the right attitude about collecting. Let us know what you decide.

Love the Skydweller but it’s bit. Daytona is the way to go for the first one. I’d get the Skydweller after

The Daytona wears much smaller than the SD. I have 7.25” wrists and could not get past the smaller size of the Daytona.

Just get the one you want the most and if you love them equally, the one which becomes available first. In the long run you are likely to end up with both.

Very different sized watches. Have you tried both? SkyD for me until they introduce a larger chronograph. I do like both models you’ve chosen. The TT champagne SkyD and black face TT Daytona are probably my favorite TT versions of each.

I really like the TT SkyD, especially with champaign dial … true classic! Love the 116500, 116505/6/8/9 and 116515/8/9 Daytonas, but do not care for the 116503 (TT) as much, but that’s just my personal preference.
I think wrist size can come into play, it honestly both a great watches to my 7.5” wrist. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I need..
a date, so in this case the SD would be the ONLY choice. For this reason I have never wanted to pickup a Daytona. Just not in my need column.
Given your description and comments I would, in your situation pickup whichever was offered 1st. As, in life, there are absolutely no guarantees. |

Are you sure you can wear the TT SkyDweller comfortably??? The two watches are polar opposite of how they wear on the wrist. The Daytona will always be the most comfortable watch in the Rolex catalog. That said and being a movement snob myself, both check the boxes of a great movement under the hood so I could give you my blessing with either of these two great models. My gut says the Daytona will be worn more between the two. Both are hot models but I think the Daytona might “wow” you more on the wrist with its historical reputation.

Follow-up to original
I think the day is arriving for the Daytona black (I let go, of the champagne TT SkyDweller for the Daytona). I might end up with 2 options
a) Daytona black dial TT - the one i mentioned about b) Daytona black dial TT with diamonds I am comfortable with either of them but would love to hear your thoughts! |
