The little things.
Interesting to me how lately I’m just not nearly as engaged in some of my past pursuits. I’m just not finding myself interested anymore.
I seem care less about some of the “bigger” stuff. And I’m getting to a point where I really don’t like spending money. It’s the little things that give me joy these days. A cup of ginger tea at night. Decaf coffee in the am. Walking the dog. Driving with the windows open. Laying in bed. Fresh sheets and pillow cases. A comedy special. A good book (although I admit, I’ve always loved a good book). A good workout. A clean and organized home. A few other items I’ll not mention in a public forum. Not sure why, but these all feel much more fulfilling to me, than some of my past enjoyments. And I’m curious, what are the little things that you enjoy?

I love
How my dog comes and checks on me to get some head pats a few times a night. The ice cold beer from the fridge after a stressful day. Mowing grass. Drives on the weekend with no destination or reason. The way she looks at me. Helping others. Going to scrap yards and junk yards. Going to thrift stores and garage/estate sales. Fixing/restoring just about anything. Fresh and tight sheets. Down pillows. Any item with history or a story. Sent from my Apple privacy invasion product |

We are headed to Florida for the winter. We really don’t like northeastern winters. Give us sunny days and palm trees.

I've had a recent life shift (good thing) and I know what you mean.
1. I enjoy a couple morning cups of local coffee (manually grind beans/Aeropress) with my light breakfast. 2. A good audiobook/podcast on my hike/walks. 3. Continuing to downsize all my crap, it's fun and productive alone time. 4. A good local beer from the fridge in the evening. |

Nice list Seth.
Some of mine: -dancing to loud music when alone in my living-room (my wife hates techno!) -being an idiot and joking around if others are onboard -good coffee -strong spirits but light beer -making music with buddies -drunk karaoke with whomever -weekend sleep-ins -sound of wind in the trees -afternoon summer storms -singing dumb pop songs with my kids… |

This is excellent, Seth! I'm thrilled to hear you're enjoying the simple things. Often times we take so much for granted. Lately I've been feeling like this, contented rather.
Health is high atop that list, as not much else is possible without it. Being grateful and enjoying something as simple as a walk at the beach or in the forest have been a couple for me lately. Ultimately making the most of each day and placing greater value into the things that truly matter, often times the simple things or ones that don't cost anything. |

I have become much calmer recently, expensive things have seemed to have lost their importance.
A cup of Yorkshire tea in a white china mug. A chat. Recently I was sat chatting with a nice man who was over 80 in a gym changing room, he was a lot fitter than me. He had lost his wife about 6 months ago and to be honest, just needed someone to listen. I lost my wife 25 years ago and understood, I didn't tell him, it was his time, but, I knew the things to say and ask through my experiences. We were sat there well over an hour, sometimes he had tears in his eyes, sometimes he was laughing, I could relate to what he was going through and just let him talk and get it all out. After we parted in the car park to go to our cars, we were about 30 yards apart, he shouted "Hey Dave, thanks" and we left it at that. It was very satisfying, it only cost me a bit of time but, I helped someone. Watching my Granddaughter become a young lady, she is 17 and went to visit my son in Jersey City last week, it's a big journey for a youngster and my daughter was worried sick about her, she needn't have worried her daughter had a great time and I could see that my son was very proud of where he lives and hosted her brilliantly for the week, she had a journey of a lifetime seeing places in Jersey City and NYC. Listening to my wife sing along to the radio, she can't sing at all but, I know she is happy when she sings. Falling asleep on my old man recliner chair, well, I'm an old man, a 10 minute nap and waking to see a cup of tea that my wife made me in anticipation of me having a loud snore and waking myself up. A smile from my wife, she smiles all the time for me. Liverpool 1 Leeds United 2 was also very, very satisfying.

I seem to get the most excitement and fulfillment when I see my 14 yr old boy or 12 yr old girl laugh or smile....nothing gives me more satisfaction than making them laugh or smile. I strive to make them do either every day. it lights up my world.

The little things.
Once my kids are out of the house I want to live somewhere that’s walkable with a couple close coffee shops and a few nice restaurants we can become regulars at (ie silly little name plate on the table). Pretty simple but would make me smile. Then part time somewhere I can walk outdoors and take a swim whenever I want…. Fairly simple I think.

Dave, your description of showing compassion to that man is poignant and edifying; a reminder that there are different and sometimes simple ways to help people, and that doing so is worthwhile. What a good person you are, not only to your family but strangers too. (You’ve inspired me to stop hissing at and kicking all-comers out of my way in the daily bus and sushi queues!)
Brian, very heartwarming post too! |

I love this thread.
Burning pine needles. Cutting down big dead trees. Watching the deer and other wildlife in the yard. Skiing and biking locally. Morning coffee. Taking Moon photos. It’s a good thing I bought my expensive watches earlier in life, because I likely wouldn’t do it now. |

Probably a natural shift for many but I really believe after the last 2 years of Covid and all the political and geographical strife people are finding peace and happiness again in a simpler life!

Good thread. Just had a conversation with my best half about how we have enough money to do whatever we want but whatever we want to do costs next to nothing these days.
Hanging out in front of fireplace with dog and drink Sitting on back porch and enjoying view while thinking of nothing Getting through a week of workouts without pain New shoes and new socks Old fleece pullovers Waking up to sound of rain hitting metal roof |

I avoid caffeine. I will drink it, but I avoid where possible. I just like the taste of coffee. And the ceremony of it. I drink a lot of decaf.

I do want a certain Patek. But I really am not sure I will ever be able to pull the trigger on it. I think, for now anyway (I know myself) that I am done with most big purchases. Not cars though. While I am definitely consolidating and slowing down, I know at some point I will be buying something again. But cars, I am hopelessly addicted and truly is something that brings me enormous joy.
