fully automatic espresso machine

Anyone have one, they are pricey. Do you like it? What if i switch between caffeine and decaf - how easy? What do you recommend?

Best machine I have ever had is a Nivona; Also tried Delonghi, but they are put together really cheap. Jura should also be a great brand.

Pricey? Well, buy something that makes great coffee. Will probably be around 1000 USD

Edit: Not easy to switch between regular / decaf, as you would have to empty the grinder

I have had a Jura for a while now and it’s a wonderful machine. Expensive but worth it.

We have had Nespresso machines in the $250 range that use pods. An aficionado would laugh, but it’s easy. The coffee is good enough for us. May not be what you’re looking for.

Original reply [only for semi-automatics]: Whatever machine you get, you can switch between regular and decaf beans if you just weigh out what you need each time (for me, 18 grams), and just grind that. Instead of keeping them in the grinder’s hopper. The tricky thing is adjusting the grinder to how coarse or fine you need to make it, so your shot pours well. You can mark on some tape where the desired settings are. Another idea: freshly grind the regular beans but pre-grind your decaf.

I look forward to seeing where this thread goes. I need a new machine too. Wanted a cool dual boiler Profitec but a busy life and wife may push me to a more automatic solution… I’ve been eyeballing some Jura and Gaggia models so far but am really nervous whatever comes out of them will end up tasting like coffee from the local Lexus dealer waiting area….

Oh, I have a dual-boiler Profitec Pro 700, and sometimes wonder if I would buy it again if starting over. It’s nice and making coffee on it is pretty quick and a fun ritual. But I think I would probably save that money, and just stick with V60 pourover or, if I had to get a machine, maybe a Moccamaster Classic for way less. I personally wouldn’t be going the other way, towards fully automatic but that’s because I have a taste for filter coffee and am also a bit cheap at heart.

I had the same question a year ago and bought a Jura E8 after a few days of research and comparison shopping. It makes an excellent espresso, latte, cappuccino and regular coffee: just add good beans and water. We average 8 drinks a day from it. It’s wonderful. Makes Starbucks coffee taste weak. And it’s very simple to use. If you’re not into milk based drinks they have another model for around a grand.

The E 8 also has a chute in the rear for ground coffee, like a decaf product maybe, you can add to bypass the hopper and grinder.
