What is the best sign to look for when you are looking for bad polishing work? Would it be really obvious or are there certain signs to look for?

Know in detail what an original is supposed to look like. Sharp body lines, beveled edges. Go to YouTube. Plenty of folks with knowledge talking about it.

This is right, different models and even same models different years have various finishes. If the watch has lug holes, it makes it slightly easier as they appear oval after over polishing.
