AP RO and Chopard Alpine Eagle - room for both?

I'm beginning to think yes...

The Royal Oak came in today, and I had every intention of selling the Alpine Eagle to make room. Love the AE but didn't think it would make sense to have both. After seeing them side by side, and even holding the Chopard separately, I feel like there's enough difference there and there would be occasions where I would reach for the AE without too much thought. It is such a beautiful piece!

Not taking anything away from the RO, because it's something I've had my eye on for awhile and it truly is gorgeous, but both can stand on their own!

Fair enough. It is built off of the old Chopard St. Moritz if we want to talk history, but I could see where you'd get that.

Based on the dial colors I'd say yes they can.

Side by side would you say the finishing of the AP blows away the AE or are they similar quality?

I would say they're very similar, which is really saying a lot for Chopard. The quality is there, it's the hype that's not.

That Chopard packs a helluva lot of watch for 14K.

I actually kind of like that it's not a Genta designed piece since it's all the rage. I've been on a Wei Koh phase lately, and you can tell he really respects what Chopard is doing.

Both are gorgeous @Jparm. I always get excited by your posts and photograph. I'll never own a RO unfortunately, but the AE is on my radar. I wish they made the "base version" in a no date.

Thank you for the very kind words! I would highly recommend the Alpine Eagle to anyone that is looking for a high quality watch that hits above its price point. Obviously 13k+ is a lot of money for a watch, but when compared to the Royal Oak or VC Overseas, it is fairly cheap for what you're getting.

As an enthusiast, I would say the chopard is just a derative if the RO. But if I step back, the chopard is a great looking watch. And there’s nothing wrong with owning something that good looking

Not for me. I'd always reach for the RO in a situation where I'd wear the AE; and if not such a situation, I'd wear a more sport-oriented piece, such as a Rolex, or a watch on a leather strap.

Personally, I'd move the AE and buy something else of interest, but it's all about preferences here.

If you can reasonably rationalize keeping both, then go for it!

I like the original 1980 St. Moritz design, I love the Alpine Eagle. I do not have a RO but I have a ROO that I sometimes wear on bracelet and I'm buying the AE for my birthday.

There are round watches, there are cushion watches and there are square watches. It is tasteless to say that a manufacture like Chopard's take on recreating a integrated sports watch they made in 1980 is a direct copy of the fan-favorite (which is rarely owned by the members bashing the AE in the first place). I'm always curious as to what they'd find appropriate for a integrated sports model that aren't from the big 3, lol.

I bought my Overseas 47040 directly from VC and like my Girard Perregaux Laureato better. I've said this multiple times on this forum. I even like my GP Laureato better then my old Ingy...

This is a fun one. I like my Genta designs. I also like my integrated 70's and 80's designed pieces too. I appreciate all designs in good taste.

I have owned a Royal Oak in the past and have an Alpine Eagle in the collection right now.

As I shared in another thread, AE at $14k retail with the base movement is the best choice for me in the mid tier luxury sports watch segment. With the LUC movement XP edition, you now have a great alternative to the likes of Royal Oak and Overseas time-and-date only editions. Not only the AE XP, the likes of Antarctique and Streamliner also offer collectors something different and at comparable build qualities to the AP and VC sports watches.

For my 6.5 inch wrist, the likes of AE, Antarctique, and Streamliner wear like a dream compared to the RO and Overseas. When Chopard adds other color choices to the AE XP line, I will surely add another one to go along with my blue AE.

For me, a blue AE (your version), an AE XP, and a 39mm RO (15202 or 15300), can all exist in the same collection as long as dial colors are different.

OP I would keep both because like you said they are different watches that can be worn for different occasions. But that being said the AE is a lot of watch for the money and is something to be admired. Of course the RO is one of the standards for sport watches.

Personally, I would sell the Chopard Alpine Eaglet if I also have an AP RO...why go to a substitute watch when you already have one of the best sports watch(I'm talking about Nautilus/Royal Oak/Overseas)

I've got 2 RO and did have a 3rd one but sold that one, also recently been thinking abt adding this Chopard. I think there is room for both in the collection but don't know why I haven't worn either one of my RO recently. And I do think that both RO and AE are missing a trick with not having interchangeable straps like Vacheron or frederique constant etc

As long as you like them they can well coexist based on their different dial colors alone.

Just to add, I am surprised how well the Alpine Eagle as a package stands its ground vs the 15300 in the comparison photo above given I dislike many of Chopard's individual design and engineering choices. The Alpine Eagle certainly looks more modern there.

If you don't need to sell the AE then see how both live in your collection. Get past the honeymoon phase with the AP and you will know. They are different enough that they could work together.

When you consider the amount of members that own several GMTs but almost no other pieces in their collection, then I think owning two integrated watches from different manufacturers in distinct colors is an easy sell.

That's a very good point. For some reason, when it comes to Rolex, it's ok to have more than one of the same model ("the 16710 is SO different than the 1675 though!!").

If I had two RO's up there, I wonder how that would change things. I'd much rather have the variety of two different watches vs. two Royal Oaks with different dials.

Room for both, but I'd wear the RO more often, while setting up the AE under whatever good lighting I have and just stare at the dial.

Congratulations on the AP. I would say keep both for the time being and see if the AE gets any wrist time. If you after some time you aren't really wearing it, then sell.
