I have tested plots in a safe, darkening over a year and change.

Couple things, moisture and a safe can darken - as can other factors thru normal use in the sun. Also, lume is sometimes different on black dials versus blue, and even with runs of same color dials. Pure speculation, these dials were done in batches and the lume compounds varied a bit when delivered, and when sat waiting to be applied. But the older you go, the more variances in lume compounds you see over time.

Don't want to be a party pooper, but the way that true dome seems to make the HR markers look huge and distorted the D in OYSTERDATE is unusual !

I think that is more a result of the fonts on the "Smudge Dials" than the crystal. The black "SUBMARINER" dials, rather than the ZUBMARINER dials, have more softer fonts on the top half of the dial than the Z dials (black or blue), and usually a bigger shield, too. Black dials went to the "S" dial a couple years earlier than the blue.

Are you referring to the first photos I posted or the second set?

The first pics with the high distortion was with a supposed factory NOS T19. This crystal came apart in 2 weeks or so, no clue if it was a bad crystal or the retaining ring was too tight. I’m not a watchmaker.

Now that I’m looking closer at the pics I see what your referring to. The markers still have a little bit of distortion along the edge.

This is with the truedome

According to the original owner of my red 1680, it was a gift from the ex-wife, and sat in a safe for years/decades after their divorce (new wife wasn’t keen on him wearing it).

The lume plots were indeed dark. After about a year of daily wear by yours truly, the plots had lightened noticeably.

That looks awesome. It’s interesting that the lume has lightened up.

Killer piece! And that truedome makes it look its best

In terms of the lume plots changing color... some say that heavier light/UV exposure will keep the plots lighter or lighten up already dark plots.

Whats interesting is that the matte dials from 68-70 era that tend to turn tropical most often (not always) have lighter lume plots as well... Perhaps something to do with the increased UV that turned the dials tropical. Of course these are all just best guesses no one knows for sure.

Great-looking Tudor!

All this talk of crystals .... Why not just install a correct top hat? This watch was not designed for a dome.

I was considering the dome vs top hat question on the train on the way home today. Must admit to being a top hat man myself but that the dome does look fantastic here.
