I'm a sub lover, the GMT is "OK" and I may consider owning one, but for me I can't get on the Daytona boat. The dial has alot of action on it, and I refuse to beleive that 10% percent of Daytona owners actually use any of the Daytona dials. I can see its beauty and history, and may consider owning one of these too, but perhaps its more hype than watch?...
Solid thread, its nice that people can disagree without problems. TRF has some great people.

I have had two TT Blues and one 18Kt Blue. I would buy the new Blue Dial in white gold if and only if I won the lottery. I do plan to pick up another 18Kt Blue from the early 90's within the next year. |

I am a HUGE Sub fan, and also like the GMTs (old style). Again, different strokes for different folks.
Thankfully we all have different taste! |

I just bought a new DJ, I'm a fan of looking at the sport watches, they're very nice, but they just don't fit me personally. I don't like anything with a big bezel and numbers - except perhaps the Daytona.
I like them, just not on me. imho

Being a traveler I gravitated toward the GMT and find it to be the ultimate Rolex. Never thought I'd want a Sub till I acquired a Tudor Sub. I find they [GMT vs Sub] wear very differently on the wrist. Everyone should have at least one of each in their collection.

I was recently deciding between a Sub and a GMT. Ended up choosing GMT. The additional time zone function happens to be very useful to me, and from the aesthetics' standpoint, I prefer the looks of the GMT. I might still get a Sub in the future - I don't think my collection would be complete without it. :-)

I love my Subs, SS and TT, but would love to have a Pepsi GMT. The new ones don't do it for me. The other Rolex models are o.k. but I love the rugged Subs.

I started out chasing a sub but *very* quickly moved to the GMT since I had a genuine need for the dual time zone functionality.
My 16750 has served me supremely well, and with it's black bezel insert it's handsome to boot. I swore I would never sell it but now that my need for the dual time zone functionality has diminished, I'm finding myself thinkg about trading the 16750 for a 1680 Sub. I don't dive much (at all) but I'm very much admiring the big crown, the thick plastic crystal and the ability to time things with the bezel. As far as the iconism goes. That's a plus and a minus. Either way...back to the original post....I totally get the submariner.

After you have been immersed in Rolex on TRF, you will become more refine and learn to LOVE the Sub.

To be honest, I don't understand the appeal of the Daytona...or the Explorer II (though I do like the Exlplorer a great deal).
Knowing that I'd probably only ever own one Rolex, it came down to the Sub or the GMT. I've had a pic of these two sitting next to each other on my computers for years in anticipation of owning one. When it came time to choose, the ceramic bezel of the GMT made the decision tough. The GMT in the magazine adds makes it hard to resist. But, in the end, the Sub was a little more subtle. There is not as much "going on" with the Sub vs the brighter numbers and 3rd hand of the GMT. The black faced Sub has an almost flat steel look about it that means business while the GMT (especially with its now bigger size) demands attention. The Sub has a long history and is copied extensively for a reason. The Daytona and GMT seem a bit more faddish to me. Of course, that's just me...and I'm not one who is looking for attention. |

i will repeat myself here and say that the no date sub is the greatest watch i have ever laid eyes on ... although i don't own one yet. i chose an exp ii over the sub. why? i have no clue. in the end, i'm loving the exp ii that i wear it everyday.

No, no... don't get me wrong. I might have worded this better but the Sub rarely ever really changes (at least the SS version) while the GMT goes through periodic "enhancements" that I'm guessing are to stimulate sales. Don't know much about the Daytona's other than that they seem to be very popular right now. If you are a fan of the Daytona and do not understand the appeal of the Sub then I can tell you that I know exactly what you mean... only in reverse! Here is a smaller version of the last pic I studied for months before coming to my decision on the Sub over the GMT. Basically, I chose the Sub because it is not as flashy (though I would love a version of the Sub with ceramin bezel). Not a fan of polished bracelets. |

It doesn't do much for me, either.
My wrist doesn't like 40mm+ watches. It likes 36mm watches. |

I recently posted a thread- GMT lore. I now understand the appeal of the GMT. It was a watch worn by an elite group of people in the Air Force, airlines, and other people pushing the limits in many areas. I think the GMT reminds us of the barriers broken in the past (with the help of this model Rolex) which has helped us get where we are now.
Now having said that....the Sub was used as a piece of "equipment" by an equally elite group of people that were pushing the most extreme boundaries in our oceans. When I was a child, I was glued to the television watching Jacques Cousteau specials. I wanted to be Cousteau. Watching men explore an alien world full of strange animals while conditions were hostile and dangerous. Sign me up. Men like this needed a watch to explore the depths of our oceans. Rolex engineers, another equally elite group of men, developed an advanced watch to handle the extreme pressures. They weren't trying to develop this watch for prosperous "white colar" people. The Sub was for real explorers. Many of these men died establishing the limits of going deep. So when you look at these watches, think of those brave men in that cold dark place. |

The Sub and the GMT are the only .....
The Sub and the GMT are the only Rolex watches that I would ever consider owning. Along with the Sub I am including the Seadweller as I have owned a couple of them and the new Deepsea. The rest of the Rolex line, with the possible exception of the Explorer, has no appeal to me. So I guess I am just the opposite.

I noticed the other day in an interview with James Cameron that he was wearing a SS submariner. I've seen him doing some of his underwater adventure documentaries wearing what looked like the same watch. Here's a man who could wear any watch he wanted and chooses the simple SS Sub.
But then there's definitely a hard core adventurer in that man so I'm not surprised. Doesn't seem that he's too worried about being seen wearing what everyone else is wearing. |

Thankfully we have differing tastes here at TRF. If not, things could get boring in a hurry. There is a Rolex out there for all of us. Enjoy.

To me the Subbie has a simple elegance. On the SS model, usually there are no diamonds and polished center links. There are a lot of them in the wild, so it has become iconographic. Of course, if you are a Bond fan, the Subbie is the "go to" watch.
