Problem shipping watch out of Austria, help needed!
Hi all,
I've bought a watch from a private seller in Austria. We are trying to use DHL Austria for shipping but the max declared value for watches is EUR10k. DHL will not ship if the value is more than this. The watch value is more than this and we need to declare the actual value in order to get full insurance coverage. Anyone have any ideas how to solve this? Thanks! |

You would need a 3rd party insurance policy or ship at risk. This is just like FedEx in USA. They won't insure non-business jewelry shipments.

Sounds like an amateur private seller - otherwise she or he would have a 3rd party shipping insurer.
You may need to unwind the deal if the seller can’t get a quick binder with a shipping insurer. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

You need a third party insurance such as parcel pro or ship IFS.
When you say bought did you already pay for this item? A quick way around this would be to use a third party dealer or have the seller (or yourself) create an account with one such insurer.

Can’t you just book a same day return flight and go get it?

Thanks guys for the inputs:
- Already paid via escrow, but not released the funds yet. Technically we could just cancel the deal, but I like the watch and hope to resolve this issue. - Can't do return flight as Austria is really far for me. - Seller is using third party insurer SECURSUS. Issue isn't lack of insurer, its lack of COURIER. - DHL was the first choice, but DHL refused to handle anything more than EUR10k (this was new to me!!). It's not just coverage / liability, they REFUSE to SHIP if declared is > EUR10k. They won't even take the item. - FEDEX Austria looks like the next option, but Seller is worried he might end up with the same result as DHL (basically they will just refuse to send it). Already sent email for confirmation but they haven't replied yet. Hopefully they agree. Appreciate any help on these: - Any recommended 3rd party insurers? Not sure how good SECURSUS is. Will check out IFS, but parcel pro seems to be a pain to set up account for. - What is smartest way for declarations? Online advice states NEVER to blatantly display value / item description on the outside of the box. I mean would "EUR15k VINTAGE WATCH" on the shipping labels just be a magnet for thieves? - Are there any 3rd party insurers that will honor the INSURED value even if the declared value is different? Appreciate any help from the experience people here. Thanks much! |

I can tell you what many dealers do is ship it under the guise of service which is a loop hole. I’d personally not do this transaction as the guy doesn’t know how to ship the item to you.

But maybe old watch parts may work. I’d probably consider shipping head and bracelet separate this way internationally and fully insure each package to get to 20k euro combined on 2 DHL packages.
