Sentimental incoming: Casio CA-53W

Sentimental incoming: Casio CA-53W

I didn’t get interested in “nice” watches until the DJ41 my boss gave me in Dec 2018. In 2020, I inherited my maternal grandpa’s DD 1803. I’ve since spent thousands on the DD bracelet, purchased an Oris, Tudor, Father’s Day present Tudor, two Seikos, and a Tissot. For my wife, a Pasha and ladies OP. I also have and serviced pocket watches from both my maternal and paternal great (and great-great) grandfathers. I was close with both of my grandfathers so having those pockets watches and DD means the world to me.

But looking back, I’ve always liked watches. I vividly remember my paternal grandfather’s Timex Ironman with indigo, which I thought was abt the coolest thing ever. He also had a Casio calculator watch which was obviously amazing for a boy. For years, he would remind me that I broke his calculator watch. Most likely, I just messed with the settings but still, I remember the chastising to this day.

After he died, my aunt gave me his CA-53W calculator watch and a Casio FTP10 Fliptop. I finally got around to replacing the strap on the CA53 and went to pull the battery. I’ll be a monkey’s uncle if it didn’t start right up! I received the strap today and will take it with me to CA on Thursday for a paternal family reunion. Of course, I will be wearing it so a little bit of my grandfather will be there with us.

Here is my priceless CA-53w and with my great-great grandfather’s Tavannes:

That's a great story! Timex and Casio also got me into watches from a very young age. In fact, I have the same calculator watch and the Timex Ironman. Michael J Fox wore one in Back to the Future as well!

Here's a shot of my vintage Ironman:

I owned this watch a blue moon ago. Wish I still had it!

To the OP, thanks for sharing that story!

Love it! When I was a kid, the big buttons and indiglo was about the coolest thing I’d ever seen.

The Casio made it with me to LA and will be on my wrist this weekend!
