3rd Qtr numbers: Rivian lost $31,000 per truck sold. Ford lost $36,000 per truck sold. Elon has a wide moat.

Tesla model 3/y experiences
Quote:
Actually, this thread isn’t that divisive yet. But I predict it will get a lot worse. In my case, I have a 4 year old BMW 540i with only 19,000 miles on it. That’s a rate of about 4,750 miles per year, and that 19,000 includes one long drive from PA to FL when I moved down here. I just don’t drive it enough to ever worry about the cost of fuel, and the EV virtue signaling always seems a little overbearing to me. I actually have my eye on a new C8 Corvette with the 3LT and Z51 packages. To me, a car is much more than just transportation. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I think the Model S looks better, but, and I can't believe I'm saying this, the new Prius looks great, as does the future Honda Prelude.

No thanks. Too many very unhappy customers in all sort of EV in my part of North America with the colder climate. The range shrinks drastically.

I have no objections to EV. In fact, cross-shopping some EVs right now.
However, I am familiar with Tesla’s build quality and value for $. The fit/finish is unacceptably poor. You get an interior that is both unattractive (and will date extremely poorly) and less luxurious than other vehicles even 25-50% below a given model’s price point. Musk is a buffoon but I could set that aside if the product was compelling today. It isn’t. The autonomous drive capabilities are overstated and will soon be eclipsed by other offerings. Its core semi-autonomous modes are already matched. Main selling points are infrastructure (now more/less a non issue) and performance. I have performance cars and learned long ago that I prefer balance over straight line performance. My issue currently is deciding whether to wait for some next gen offerings. Also cross-shopping vs ICE. For a family vehicle safety and comfort are paramount - but so is reliability. |

I’m trying to be objective but as much as everyone complains about the build quality, is the Q4 E-from good value? I don’t think so with that range. Same with most EV from all other manufacturers. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

What Tesla is ahead of the curve (vs other EVs) is drivetrain experience (batteries, motors) and software (OTA updates). So if you’re comparing reliability, EV to EV, Tesla shines (though the other OEMs are very quickly catching up). I am speaking of the finish/fit/quality of experience at price points. Tesla does poorly here. For my search I am really focused on latest / nextgen. I am honestly a bit concerned about my options - EX90, for example. My Volvo experience has been mixed to say the least. The EX90 is heavily delayed, ostensibly due to software problems. I don’t know if I want the first year of that vehicle… That said, Tesla is willing to sell junk - so (setting aside all the other idiocy of the CT) I would bet the CT release will have even more issues than the EX90… so I may end up back in an ICE vehicle. |

There are a few active EV threads here but in terms of the OP's ICE to EV question, this is what I have found from my switch (although BMWs not Teslas). I'd modified the text to better reflect the Tesla emphasis in this thread.
I went from a X6 to M550i to an iX M60. Here’s my take on the ICE to BEV switch 1. Range - my daily commute is about 10 miles total, so range for 90% of the time is a non-issue. I overnight charge at home every couple of weeks. I love it. Range anxiety is real but it definitely diminishes once you get used to the car and EV experience. 2. Home charging - I’d definitely have a level 2 charger installed at your house. I chose the Emporia and had it hard wired so it would be capable of 48A (11kW). For a Tesla, I'd almost certainly get the newer Tesla home charger that charges Tesla and J1772 EVs. 3. Destination/fast charging - for destinations around 300 miles or less, I look for ways to level 2 charge. It requires some planning but overnight charging at a relative’s house or hotel gets the job done. Not sure about Canada, but I'd guess that the Tesla charging network is the best out there for levels 2 and supercharging. 4. Long road trips - I haven’t had the courage to try a trip more than 300 miles. Fast non-Tesla DC chargers aren’t too plentiful here in the Midwest so in these situations we take our gas SUV. But with Tesla, I think longer road trips (even if not frequent) are very manageable. I personally went with BMW over Tesla because of the fit/finish issues I've heard from Tesla owners. |

I think Tesla Model 3 works just fine. But you have to drive it and drive the other ones then compare. After driving the Model 3 and other EV in similar segment, I would consider Model 3 only if the charging network for road trip is important, or if I want the full auto drive capability (potential) is something that I want. Otherwise, I would consider the other options. If you don't do road trip, and will be home charging most of the time, I would consider Lexus RZ. Lexus RZ doesn't do well in range compare to something like Model Y, nor does it charge very fast. But if you can charge at home overnight and you mostly only drive intown. then I think comfort and quality would be higher on my list.

When I owned my Model S it was common for every Tesla owner of any model to be a super fanboy until year 4. Then they rebelled. I don’t have the stats but I’ll bet the numbers of repeat EV buyers is far lower than repeat hybrid or basic gas ICE buyers. It’s a fun one time experience but it’s just not cost effective.

I just picked up a model 3 a couple weeks ago. I wanted to see what this whole EV thing is a about. I decided to lease it for 2 years.
Right off the bat from day 1, I had a problem with the cameras not calibrating. The cameras control a lot of the features on the display and cruise control. Right away I had to bring the car back to the dealer. They had the car in the service center for 6 days waiting to install a new computer. At this point they had the car in the shop longer than I had it. I have it back now and everything is working. The car is really fun to drive and has a lot of giddy up. I like all the technical stuff in it. I already have a couple other cars to use for long trips and a charger at home so range is not an issue. My first experience with Tesla was not very good. However, we'll see what the future brings. Right now I'm enjoying the car. |

Yup, every other car was an EV in Denmark and Norway. Same in my country The Netherlands. We have the best road network in the world with charging stations everywhere. I wouldn't want to own an EV if I lived in rural Montana or something... But here, no issue whatsoever.

I ended up getting my Model Y a couple of weeks ago. I love it. I don’t see any issues with build quality compared to a Q5, NX or x3. I love the technology. The range hasn’t been an issue at all once you have the home charge set up. Currently, I’m getting 11kW from the home charge. Also, the Tesla Supercharging network is unbeatable. I hope you enjoy your M3 as much as I enjoy my MY.
