No, of course not. BUT consider this . . .

When Tiger doesn't play, television audiences drop 50%, 60% or even more. That is a staggering number.

Obviously, Tiger's not going to form a break-away tour; he cares too much about the four majors and breaking all the time-honored records.

But if he didn't, is he enough of a one-man show to actually create his own tour and pull the best players in the world into it, basically taking over golf?

Yes, he is. I have attended Tiger's Chevron World Challenge Tournament in S. Cal for several years and almost all of the gallery follows him !

The other players in the field are basically 'left alone'.

A lot of people don't like Tiger because he takes all of the attention and camera time away from the other pros. However when you have someone as talented as Tiger you have to watch.

Tiger is certainly different though, he could create his own tour and be quite successful especially with his corporate backers. Like the OP stated, he cares too much about destroying Jack's and Sam's records and his rightful place in history as the greatest golfer, if not athlete, of all time. He will stay with the PGA and probably end up around 130 wins and 25 majors, becoming the Pete Rose (records wise) of golf. These numbers will never be touched unless baby Sammy turns out to be even better. As for the other golfers hating him, the smart ones know that he is the reason they are making considerably more money these days.

Not much of a golfer, but Tiger Woods certainly seem like the best golfer right now.
Don't know about how succesful he would be making his own tour. There are a lot of players on tour that don't like him much. Start with number 2 player in the world (Phil).

In fact, I think I read the tournament in Colorado that used the weird scoring system (Spapleford?) had to fold when Tiger decided he would no longer make it one of his tour stops.
