*rant*

The wife and I went to see Marshall Tucker at the inner harbor here the other night (Billy Baldwin made an appearance on stage lol, boy was he hammered). Anyway we had just moved into a new house and I had just picked up some stuff that was remaining at the old place like my PC (custom liquid cooled beast with 20" widescreen lcd, and some other miscellaneous things like some new motherboards I had kicking around and spare parts as well as my gateway server and ftp server. Well By the time I got home we had to fly so the wife just hopped in and we left. During the concert my wife ran into one of her friends who had some drinks and asked if we could drop her off home. No problem I guess. Well normally my windows stay up because I use the air and did not realize that on the way home she rolled the back window down. Well the wife and I got home and I hopped out and locked the doors (not realizing the rear window was down). Now mind you, I am one of the IT staff for a few of the local municipalities and know most of the police pretty well not to mention the lot I park in is Syracuse uniform across the street from me where most of the police get their ammo etc. Well I was parked right under a streetlamp with a big sign on the side of the building that says "Warning, this property is protected by video surveillance!" I wake up and the car is empty. My Pioneer DVD head unit was gone, the back seat was empty. I called and did a police report, and since they know me well they did DNA swabs and the whole 9 yards. I then found out that they had moved the seat all the way forward and up rendering driving useless for me because they broke the raise and lowering handle off inside the seat. I figured they were trying to steal the car but later had a sudden brainstorm that in order to fold my back seat down they had to move the seat up. I checked when I got home and sure enough the trunk was empty. Subs, amp and caps gone. The car will not start now either as for some reason they took all of the relays out of my fuse panel which I have to wait for the VW dealer to order at $220.00. I know I will never get any of this stuff back and it sets me back a peg. It is a very depressing situation as I had 8 years worth of pictures and software on that PC that I will never get back. Sorry this thread is so long but I just had to vent.

I'm sorry about that. I'm not sure which VW do you have, but on some models when you push the lock button on the remote and hold it for a couple of seconds, the car automatically closes the sunroof and rolls up all windows. Maybe yours have no such feature -- or maybe US models do not implement that due to stupid security impacts :(

That sucks, man! So since you parked where there was supposedly video surveillance do you or the police have video of these a**hats? Either way, very sorry to hear about this and here's hoping you DO get your stuff back!

Sorry about that Josh. Hope they catch the little barstewards but the chances are slim. Scumbags seem to blend into the crowd and just disappear. A jewellery Rep got done over in Perth a few days ago after going into a shop to peruse the merchandise and put his bag down, big mistake, £600,000.00 gone in the blink of an eye.

Really sorry to hear of your losses, we're all thinking of you buddy.
Hope you get some of it back, keep chasing and never give up!
How big is your memory card on your camera?
As you know, lots of deleted stuff will still be there.

I feel for you. I have a rather skewed opinion of how to treat the people who do things like this, but I'll keep that opinion to myself.

Re your pictures, I used to back up my computer HD every month without fail. I slacked off for a while, then had a few computer problems. I rushed to back up the files, and was lucky enough to not have any real computer problems.

I know it's hindsight, but set yourself a calendar appointment to back up your files monthly. It would kill me to lose all my family pics from the last six years, so now I do the backups on a regular basis (again).

For what its worth, I hope the catch the scum who stole your stuff, and he gets put into a cell with.....well, you can fill in the blank.

Josh, sorry to hear it man!!!! I feel for ya, I've had a similar thing happen, luckily I had all my photos at home not on the laptop, but the mac book pro was only 2 weeks old and hidden out of sight.

I hope you get your things back and I have everything crossed for the return of the pc with the photos!!!!!!!

That is indeed terrible news, Josh.......and I don't blame you at all for venting.

Hope the cops can catch those bastids and recover most of the stolen stuff.

Good luck - JJ

Josh, doesn't sound like you will ever see your belongings again so I'm sorry for your loss and anguish!!!
As stated if you were parked in a surveillance area is there any good video of the crime for the police to use???

yep. bad deal. however, for future reference please do consider backing everything up and/or storing on multiple computers......
other way is to keep the camera cards which are also a stable form of memory.
having said that......it's a real shame.

Unfortunately the cameras are a spoof. They took care of the loitering issue they were having though. I did back up my data frequently to one of the other 3 drives in my PC. Never plan for a PC theft but I will from now on I suppose. I am glad the PC will be useless to them without the pump and cooling system that I fabricated for it. It will overheat and shutdown in a matter of 30 seconds when turned on. I also use a very complex 25 character password that they wouldn't get past anyway. DNA swabs were sent to the crime lab and the results are still pending. The only places that I would think they would take it are the pawn shops but I have been on them like white on rice and nothing has turned up yet. I walk in and casually browse without mentioning anything. This experience has made me nervous, I am waiting for my dirtbike and the rims off my car to disappear next. The sad part is that it is a fairly upstanding neighborhood. I don't get it.

I'm afraid it happens in the best of places Josh, I've had a car stolen right from out of my garage a couple years ago, and the area I lived in was quite upstanding too, seems the thieves decided to do a few surrounding areas, home cars that sort of thing.
