Black: 116500 > 16520
White: 16520 > 116500

The black bezel / black dial combo is an amazingly clean look, but the black bezel / white dial / black sub-dial look of the 500 is just a bit too busy for my liking.

♛- Yet to be determined, but a white 16520 is on the short list. (I believe that I'll be able to read it better than my old 116520)

I had a 2004 black dial and wore it for 15 years.
Traded into a black dial ceramic.
Haven’t worn it yet. But it for sure Is more eye catching to me.
No regrets so far

I hope to get or at least see a white dial.
I think the picture of look pretty unique

Lot of different factors to consider and as others have said there’s no wrong decision.

Here’s what I’m doing. I’m currently waiting for a 500 from my AD. If that starts looking like it’s not happening in the next year I will go for a 16520.

So I’m looking at them now cause as you say pricing is all over the place depending on which one you look at. Floating cosmograph can cost you 100K. But you can find some nice pieces for less then 10k more than a 500 at gray prices.

So not sure if you mentioned that you are able to get a 500 New at msrp? If so the answer is obvious. If not spend a little over gray 500 prices and get yourself a nice 16520.

Already a collectible and still reasonable relatively speaking.

Fast forwarding this discussion 4 years, now in 2023. What do folks think now, given currrent market conditions and also the 126500?

I like the Zenith Daytona more than my white ceramic Daytona.

If i had to choose it would be the 116500 for me, its a newer model and part of the current Daytona lineup. It features a ceramic bezel and a modern movement.

I’ve said it a few times, I have 4 Daytona’s. 2 x 16520 and 2 x ceramic. I wouldn’t sell the 16520 but would part with the ceramic’s. The zenith Daytona is a fantastic watch.

Interesting that reference 116520 (middle sibling between the two) isn't part of the discussion!

I don't like the steel bezel Daytonas at all, but love the look of the ceramic bezel Daytonas

I reckon nothing beats the 16520, in particular the later editions. Perfect combination on vintage aesthetics and modern functionality.

The 116500/126500 is great no doubt, but in a modern, blingy sort of way. A superior product from an engineering standpoint perhaps, but at the expense of 'soul' which is the essence of watch collection.

I’m currently weight this dilemma too, now that the price gap between 16520 and 500 has narrowed so much. Think I’m leaning towards 16520 for the charm and character - esp the black dial!
