Which Rolex would you request from AD?

I am starting a watch collection and basically wondering what watch I should go after. My favorites seem to be retail or below retail on the secondary market so I don't really want to waste a shot at getting something more valuable or rare on any of those. Any watches I should be considering that are realistic to acquire via AD?

Thanks!

This is a question that only you can decide. You need to get the watch that speaks to you, not what I or others might like.

Your best bet is to go to an AD in your area (better yet, two or three) and look at the watches they have on display and see what might speak to you. Mind you, a sports model (GMT, Sub, Daytona) will be much more difficult to get than say a Datejust. Strike up a conversation with the sales staff. Let them know what you are looking for. You never know what might be available.

If you really don’t have a preference, buy the one they offer you

Please don’t make the mistake of buying something for the sake of buying it. My favorite watch in my entire collection happens to be really undesirable in the secondary market.

I got to the point where I am today after a decade of buying and selling stuff I bought due to hype or public desirability.

My anchor has always been a Submariner - That’s the only one I got right the first time around.

I ended up requesting Sub Date, which isn't what I would have thought before trying them on (thought I was set on a DJ). So, I second the recommendation to set up an appointment at an AD or two and try a bunch on!

If you really don't have a preference, don't spend money on a Rolex or other expensive watch!

You have to choose one that you actually want and then weight it up against what you will actually get in the current market.

For example, you should be able to get an OP, a datejust in most dial combos, an air-king, an explorer or explorer ii, maybe a sea dweller or deep sea or maybe a sub. If it’s a Daytona or a GMT then chances are you’ll be waiting a long time or not at all in the current market.

But absolutely DON’T get something you don’t want/like.

Shop around, make yourself know to various ADs, explain what you want and why you want it. Be nice, be firm and be patient.

Good luck!

Why don’t you share what exactly you’re after and you’ll get some fair and honest advice?

Just buy the watches that you want to wear.

Collections come from buying watches you like to see on your wrist.

It’s an individual choice but if it was me the sub is a fantastic starting point

Appreciate all the responses, this is what I was looking for!

I have zero interest in a GMT or Daytona but if there was a shot at getting one well below gray I would go that route and trade it towards something I actually wanted.

I would prefer a DJ or Sub but gray prices don't seem to be too much higher than retail. If I put my name on something and have to wait I'd like to get some type of value for doing so. Hopefully that makes sense?

I’m into the 124270, personally. That’d be one of the easier pieces to acquire for sure.

Yes, it would be. At least for an entrance model.

WHY are you starting a watch collection, if you don’t even have a specific watch you want? Sounds to me like you decided to be a collector. That’s not generally how this works. Maybe get a puppy instead….

This is called watch buying. Not collecting. You’re not getting any value for waiting. You will wait, or buy somewhere else like a grey dealer for more. If you give them multiple options like you have here, you’re unlikely to get anything.

I would request the watch I wanted to own and wear irrespective of perceived value or being rare which is something that don't apply to Rolex watches.

Go try them all on and see what you like. I would start with a Submariner or a Date Just.

Choose the datejust you want the Most and be specific with the AD about the watch you want and why you want it. Be prepared to wait but for most dials it shouldn’t be too long and as you say, premium isn’t too high for a datejust. I’d give them 3-6 months and then consider going to a trusted seller. Good luck and let us know how you get on in due course!
