Second hand falls off 1601

Like it says. I have a early 534,xxx 1601 that I have been wearing for the last week or so. Yesterday I noticed the second hand had come off and laying between the 5 & 7 markers.

? Once hands are set on the center pinion is there anything that keep them in place ? Or is it just a pressed fit ?

Careful it doesn’t scratch the dial.

Had that happen to a modern sub an hour after it came back from service. Dial had to be replaced.

Its just a press fit. If it just came back from service, there may have been a micro piece of debris or a burr that caught when rotating and popped it off. Dont shake that watch around or the hand could scratch the dial.

Keep it hacked so that the minute hand doesn't drag the loose hand around the dial. A watchmaker can take care of it pretty easily.

Thanks guys, Dan i got the crown pulled out so hands won't move any more. I'm going to send it off to my watchmaker with an extra hand , hopefully that will do it.

A watchmaker will use a staking tool to crimp the hand back onto the seconds pinion. I hope your dial isn’t too badly scratched. Good luck.

There will be a risk that the ordinary shaking and tumbling of the package while in transit could cause that loose seconds hand to scrape across the dial in all sorts of directions.

Any competent watchmaker has the tool to tighten up the post on the seconds hand. They can come off at times and I've seen it a few times myself.

I just had a seconds hand repaired on a GMT 16750 that had also come off. A simple crimp to the post and all was well again.

I don't think a new hand will be needed, it's an easy fix. However, if you have to ship it, I'd suggest pulling the hand out of there first.

So I realized yesterday that this watch does not have the " hack feature " its a early 1560 movement. Thus the minute hand is lodged up against the second hand and the hour is not moving. The watch is more than have wound. I'm concerned about shipping with the hand moving around. I have never done this BUT can I remove the crystal myself ?

Others may feel differently, but for me it would be easier and safer to remove the movement/dial from the back. But maybe that's just my particular comfort level speaking.
