Read this from another forum, all you SD Owners....

Guys, I forgot to mention this during my post yesterday. While in Carlyle picking up the Dweller, one of the female sales associates mentioned to the store manager Fred, "Hey Fred, tell Jim what the Rolex guy said the last time he was in here." Fred Wood, the store manager, then went on to tell me that a couple of weeks ago, the Rolex rep was in the store and mentioned to them that an in house poll had been conducted with Rolex employees asking them that if they had a choice, what Rolex would they choose if they could have anyone at no cost. Reportedly 96 percent of the respondents to the survey stated that they would get the Seadweller over any other Rolex as it was the most well built of anything Rolex had to offer. Mind you, my Seadweller was already on my wrist and paid for when they made this statement so they didn't have to sell me on the merits of the watch. I had already purchased it anyway. Found that interesting and made me really glad I got the last one they had to offer in the store. Was the story true? I dont know but at that point, the AD had no reason at all to lie to me......Again thanks for all the nice comments.....Jim

They are just trying to make you feel good so you don't come back with a return or exchange .... iti s theo ldest marketing ploy in the world .... kind of like in a car dealership, when you sign papers, they make lots of noise and announce over the speaker and every one applauds ....just trying to give you an extra memory to make you feel good ....

I seriously doubt the SD will be approved by 97% of ROLEX employees ....

SD has the thickest case. It is also rated at the greatest depth and pressure testing. The new Deep Sea has a titanium caseback (only model to use this metal), and the crystal is the thickest (I think). I'm not surprised that it would be considered the most well built.

I wish they would have continued making the classic Sea-Dweller. I don't think the DeepSea has gone down as well as the GMT IIc makeover. Alot of people are pining for the classic SD to carry on in production.

The SD is no longer being made, or will be - fact !!!!

I called Rolex HQ in Switzerland and they confirmed this.

The Official line is - the SD has been replaced by the SDDS and will no longer be made.

SD's are great watches, but not the favorite of some due to their bulkiness. As others have said, a psychological sales tactic.

I believe it! SD is a case when perfection has pretty much been achieved. Wish they hadn't discontinued it - Deep Sea is a whole different watch, it's not an evolution of the Sea-Dweller.

The Sea Dweller's history is legendary. Read some of the COMEX stuff; that watch has been to hell and back and survived to tell about it.

Good account, but I can't help but feeling I'm glad you didn't buy an Airking or a Mid Size DJ. I would have a hard time believing the story that would have been on the employees voting for those as the most desirable, though they are fine watches.

Just enjoy your Seadweller. I have one too.

I think it's swings and roundabouts really. It's my opinion that the Deepsea was all about attracting a whole new generation to Rolex, a generation that has a tendency to go for oversized watches that want to make a statement. Whilst the Deepsea might ostracise classic Rolex lovers, it certainly brings plenty more to the fold, so I think it'll hold it's own nicely in the line up.

Just my thoughts on the matter
