What a great read!
I must admit being very interested in watches from the age of about 10, but got my first expensive watch at 19. I'm not exactly "old" now, I'm 28, but I did think about the idea, that people might think it's a fake Rolex, even on me, but then it hit me... So what!? Let them think it's fake. I know it's genuine and it will make me feel good. So go for it, a Rolex is certainly something special. |

What ever you chose I am sure it will be the right decision.
The Sub is one of the most iconic watches you could purchase and will always be one of the most popular, I have just given my 16610 to my dad to wear as his omega speedmaster 300 has gone into omega hospital and he loves the rolex... I also know of a friend who had a BNIB 16610 which he is going to sell for about £3250, which in my opinion is good value for money. One thing is for sure the watches and this forum are highly adictive and I am sure you will not stop at 2 watches or stop posting, even though you will not catch JJ up on tht one. good luck in your search and quest, I am sure you will make the right decision at the end of the day... |

You know you make a good point. For me I'm 29 about to go on 30. I'm personally the youngest person I know who owns a rolex, or even a fine watch for that matter. If your gonna buy a nice watch. Trust me Tag's are nice and it will be a good watch. But a Rolex is the ultimate experience! Not only that but it will hold it's value. Once you own a tag and wear it, it's like buying a new car. It will loose a 3rd to half of it's total value! Plus for some reason a Rolex always looks good on the wrist. And don't worry about what others think. You also gotta remember that most people in general have never seen a Rolex up close, so they don't really know what they look like. So unless you tell most people that you have one or are wearing one, they probablly won't even realize what their seeing unless they are personally into watches. Now I will say that certain Rolex styles will get attention if you wear them. Mainly cus they just look sharp to the eye.
If your gonna take any advice, then listen to yourself. Buy what you like and feel is good to you. If you get a rolex, Brand New or Refurbed. It does not matter, you will enjoy it. Hope this helps. |

Hi mate welcome to TRF, I am an old fossil (40) but I will give my 2 cents anyway. I wanted a Rolex since I was 15, but I could not justify it economically. That was my mistake, I could of owned one years ago! I had the same hesitation at 39YO as you have now, is it worth it, will people think I am wasting my money and to a lesser extent, will they think its a fake. The short answer is Yes, don't care, who cares! Just choose the watch that feels right for you. Touch feel and wear a Rolex for a while and then you will realize why they cost so much. After that pick up a fake and it will feel like the piece of junk that it is. To conclude, my experience with Rolex, after one year is that I love it more than when I purchased it, which is rare an this day and age.

I could not agree more, ever rolex owner faces that question. If you own a YMII priced at 30,000 to a 2,000 sea-dweller people will have there own thoughts. But they will be wrong

I bought my SD when I was 17 year old grasshopper. The best thing you can do is go try them all on and make your decision I just liked the thicker heavier feel of the SD to the sub. When you try them on you will know what suits you best. Also welcome to the forum. Enjoy your stay and post some photos when you can. Phil

Dont worry about your age - buy what will make you happy. I was 22 when I bought my GMT Master in 1985. I had a hard time finding a jeweler who'd even take me seriously when I'd inquire about trying on a Rolex, but one independent store did, and he got my biz. Enjoy the process. This forum is an excellent place to get a great deal on a 'pre loved' watch. Or if you go to an A.D. make sure they treat you right. If not, walk out and find another. Good luck. If you buy now at your age, you'll have your watch for all the important moments of your life. That's one of the cool things about mine. I was wearing it when I met my wife, at my wedding, wore it in the delivery room during the birth of my kids. Always wore it during various professional successes, on trips all over the world, etc...it truly can be a family heirloom. Go for it!

Thanks for all your comments, i drove 30+ miles at the start of the week to go to a few AD's and seen/tried on the sub and SD.
As i thought before trying it on i didnt feel as comfortable with the SD on, ( i havnt got that big wrists) so i decided there and then the sub was the one for me, it felt classy and looked sleek and classy and 'sporty' at the same time. I loved it but.............. i stumbled across a sub LV for the first time in person and wow, i was taken back. The watch looks lovely in person something different and really caught my eye. After seeing it (sub lv) i am slightly pulled more towards it, but it got me thinking would it hold its value as much as the sub? Im now stuck on two minds and im on the lookout for either watch. The sub looks great and would suit all occasions but i like the different and 'young' look you get with the sub lv |

The LV (is the 50th anniversary ed of the Sub, so some believe that means it will become a collectable item). The LV (is the 50th anniversary edition of the Sub, so some believe that means it will become a collectable item). That sounds nice and all but the fact that this new Sub (supposedly) will have a ceramic bezel, means it is made to withstand light exposure that is supposed to deteriorate bezels, at least that’s what Rolex advertisements say. I like this because I plan to keep this watch for as long as I live and pass it on when I’m gone. I used to ask if one Rolex model would have a better re-sale value over the other until TRF’ers told me not to look at the watch as an investment but rather to enjoy it now and to not care about resale value. I like this concept because it’s true. No one KNOWS what model will be rarer or more valuable than the next, we can only speculate. Also watches break, need upgrades, replacement parts which (from what I understand) takes down the value because all the parts are not original. If you are like me, you will see your Rolex watch as a companion to your life/wardrobe and family legacy. But buy whichever one “sings” to you the most. Besides, you may be able to get both the LV, 2010 Sub and another model. In the meanwhile you are taking a great first step, which is trying each model on to see which one YOU like....so kudos and continue. Good luck! |

i suggest you hold off buying your first rollie. anyway your still quite young. and you will have more credibility by age 25-30 and get bnib from AD. you can save up to get a gmt2c or the new sub.

I'm bought my first, Sub Date, at 21 as a graduation gift to myself, and 7 months later a DJ for getting a job. None of my friends have every asked if it was fake, though people out on the streets might think its my dads watch. The funny thing is that my pops takes my watches once in a while and he gets accused of wearing a fake. So no matter the age it will probably always come up.

I'm 24, but haven't thought of myself as young in the 5 years since I started selling insurance. Bought my first a month ago... Air-King. Have worn the Gucci 101 G Round series for a few years prior. Wanted to go with the same style to start off my Rolex collection.

The best way to know the "right" one for you is to go and try them out. I was convinced I wanted a DeepSea, but after trying it on, it wasn't for me. I am not blessed wth the wrists needed to make this watch look right, it just looked silly on my tiny wrists. Then I saw the Sub LV and fell in love. Tried it on, and wow, pure love. Picking it up in a few weeks, and after 20 years, I will finally have my Rolex. Good luck in your search. I honestly think the watch ultimately chooses you... You will know the "right" one as soon as you put it on.
