It is really important that our membership have total control over their computers. Everyone should be running a current anti virus-anti spyware suite and making sure it is updated at least weekly. Many people never check to be sure their subscription (if necessary) is current and they never check the dates of the anti virus definitions. This is important as a virus can block the installation of the newest anti virus definitions even though it appears your computer is downloading them.
There are many good free firewalls and antivirus/anti spyware programs. Aside from running those and windows defender, I also run CCleaner, a free utility that cleans out cookies and keeps your registry in good shape and well as the free edition of malwarebytes. Spywareblaster is another good free tool that helps block websites known to add spyware to systems. When searching the internet for these free tools, be sure that you land on the correct page. Many websites will pop up offering a similar product that you must pay for. Additionally, many websites offering these free downloads will also have a link for a pay for product. Always take the time to read before clicking install and , don't install un-necessary toolbars. They just slow down windows. You rpgrams can be accessed via the taskbar or the start, all programs menu. You don't need the toolbars to access them. If you do hit a website that tries to insall anything or won't let you release internet explorer, you can do two things. 1) hit cntrl-alt-delete and use task manager to end the process or program that is attempting to take over your system. 2) the faster wathing to do is just to power off your system and then reboot it. I would suggest running your full array of maintenance software after an experience like this. If you have questions, please feel free to PM me and I will do my best to help windows users.

AdAware came recommended, also, and Windows7 (Ultimate) seems to be the cats meow!

Thanks for the info.
I've been working a lot lately, but noticed in the short breaks I've had that I could not enjoy my usual reading at the forum. Actually I just got some error message here about me having restricted usage, but that might have something with the post I tried to read. Anyway. Full anti-virus protection in my end (for many reasons), but I use a large internet providor so perhaps I am blocked out due to that from time to time. I am not a big poster here, but I enjoy the forum very much and if I can help I'd like to do that in any way that is possible for me. I appreciate all the efforts done by all you guys running the site! Best, A |

just out of curiosity, what was the nature of the DOS attack? Was it a simple syn flood from a botnet or something more particular to a forum based website?
