One Rolex, All Occassions, Which Would You Choose?
If you were limited to one Rolex (and no other watches from other makers) which one would you choose and why? Which would be the Rolex for you considering your career, hobbies, athletics, taste in watches, utility of the watch, looks, sentimental value, etc?
For instance, I am a lawyer who interacts with a judgmental group of clients from a less affluent area of town. I don't scuba, snorkel, etc but am a basketball, golf, tennis player (and don't wear a watch during those activities). I wear a suit or sportcoat most weekdays and am a jeans/t-shirt kind of guy on the weekend. I feel like I've been wearing a tuxedo at least once a month for the past year for one occassion or another. I like having a date function on my watch but am not a huge fan of the cyclops. I believe the Sea Dweller, GMT Master and White Daytona are the 3 best looking Rolexes (although the new maxi case blue/gold Sub is really growing on me) and I hope to own all 3 sometime sooner than later. I believe the SD is the ultimate go anywhere Rolex (plus it keeps the date, lacks a cyclops lens and lacks a shiny polished bracelet). However, the SD is tough to dress up (although I have never put it on a leather/croc strap). My suspicions tell me the SD would look great on a honey, deep burgndy and dark brown croc strap. The GMT Pepsi pops a little too much to be a one and only watch for me (I suppose it would be a bit more stealthy w/ a black bezel but I believe the Pepsi is the only way to go w/ this watch). Same with the shiny look of the Daytona. Accordingly, based on the fly under the radar look of the SD, its ability to look great on it's bracelet (like all other Rolexes), NATO strap and hopefully a croc/leather strap I'm choosing it as my one and only (in this hypothetical of course). That said, I can't wait to pick up my 2010 watch: a Pepsi GMT Master II 16710. |

IMO the Datejust is the best all-around watch. It's classic looking and can be dressed up or down. As stated in previous threads I wear mine with a tux or with jeans....you can't lose.

I think the Sub with its basic SS / Black combo - but maybe a SS Datejust as well!

If it has to be a single watch, and we're looking at the question objectively, then it must be a Submariner SS. But when it comes to personal taste, I'd get the GMT IIC SS. A little more bling than the Sub, but equally universal and classy.

Ross, get the watch that really sings to you. If you think that watch is inappropriate for certain meetings, keep a plastic Casio in your desk drawer for a quick change. Sport Rolexes are very noticable. I wore a GMT & SD for many years, yet certain clients only saw the Casio.

Sub Lv with green and black bezels. A great versatile watch that can be worn discretely with a suit or sporty at weekends.

Vintage 1680 Sub
Built like a tank, fits all occasions, and not like all the other subs that people wear. Here's mine:

Easy for me. Datejust 2. Stainless with white or black face.
Clean and understated enough to be dressy but the larger size makes it work with jeans or casual wear. |

Sub LV (you have the option of changing to black bezel) or a 4,000 Sea Dweller.

Or a Black Milgauss (no one will ever see its a Rolex) Or an Explorer II if you travel.

I did choose many years ago: My Explorer 14270 was my daily (and only Rolex) watch during a period of ten years, doing everything. I'd pick that one again (perhaps a brand new 114270 to have a fresh start). It is perfect for me: Good traditional size. Not to flashy. Looks very good with the white gold around the hour markers, and with the polished plain bezel. Just enough shine to go well with a business suit as well as with jeans.
My 14270 has the heavier 93150 bracelet, so the new version with its short thin clasp would also be a good upgrade. Writing this almost makes me want to go get myself a brand new Explorer ;-) So, that's my answer: An Explorer I. Best, A |

For me, taking all things you stated into consideration, it would be a 16710 GMT for me. It is somewhat understated, much like the Sub and SD, can take most watersports, should you ever become interested, can have different looks depending on your attire and bezel insert choice, and is extremely handy when traveling. IMHO, it is the most all-around useful Rolex model there is.
