Age at first Rolex Watch Ownership

I wanted a Rolex since I was 23 years old, but due to many of life's complications I did not get one until I was 49 years old.

My father wasn't much of a watch wearer.
My uncle (mothers brother) was and I would sit with him as a 10 year old and listen to him explain about all his watches. His fav was a TT Rolex datejust.

I've been obsessed with watches since I was a little girl, inheriting the hobby from my dad. I've had numerous watches/brands over the years but always sought after a Rolex....

Bought my first at 28 and second at 29....I turn 30 in March!

My story

I read all the James Bond novels in Jr. High School and learned to want a Rolex. Reading those books also made me want to learn about sex, but that's a post for a very different forum. My parents took me to Switzerland when I was in high school and I talked them into looking at the Bucherer Store, where they actually allowed me to put on what was the lowest priced Oyster, non date, manual wind for about $90. In 1968 that was a lot of money, and my parents wouldn't spend it for me nor let me spend it...so I walked out without a Rolex, heartbroken.

In 1976, at the age of 24, I was scheduled to receive a tax refund of $400, and so I wrote a letter to Bucherer in Switzerland and asked if they would sell a Rolex through the mail. At that time, the answer was yes, and so I ordered a Date Stainless model and was charged $275. I still have and wear that watch with the original bracelet...but I've swapped the Dial twice since then. I also bought a Jubilee bracelet for it in 1989, so now I've got the watch, 3 dials and two bracelets after 30+ years.

Last summer I had it serviced and it runs almost spot on and looks new.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

1 st Rolex

I was 20 years old, My Dad and I went to an estate jeweller and paid $1060.00 cash for Full Size Datejust on Original Jubilee USA band. MY mom never would have let me spend that much money at one time. It was my first big purchase.

i was 14! a lad in the same class at school claimed he found one and i swapped it for my swatch as i knew about rolex from an early age as my dad used to constantly go on about his sub.when i arrived home with it my mum immediatly took it down the police station!they kept the watch for 6 months and as no-one claimed it i got it back.then when i was 19 i flogged it to a jeweller for 100 quid as i was skint.(i was daft then).it was a oyster perpectual date in s/s-it didnt have the original strap and it was a size between a mans and a ladys with a smooth rounded bezel.never seen one like it since!

I LOVED Rolex watches (or pictures of them) when I was a kid but had no rich dad or uncles to oblige.

I got married and had kids when I was quite young so a Rolex was out of the question, mortgage, bills, nappies etc.

I guess that's why I bought and flipped so many in such a short time when I could finally afford to do so, just to get it out of my system.

During college, my watch 'craze' started. I still keep the 9 swatches, 2 fossils, a gucci and other timepieces.

When I got my degree I sold pretty much all I had (at that time, our audio systems were our big investments...remember the AudioControl and Technics, Yamaha, ADS, Klipsh.....) took all the money, went to the local AD and got my Datejust (avatar, left); I was 22 at that time.

I am 37 now, and collection has grown....a bit!

Best part: Back then (1992), we had in Mexico 'old pesos'; so exchange rate was something like 3,000-4,000 old pesos/1 us. I still have the original invoice...in PESOS. It goes well over 12'000,000 pesos!!! (yup, million)

Geez,
You guys and gals were young when you first enjoyed a Rolex. I was 45! My passion for fine Swiss timepieces was started 20 years ago when a great aunt asked me to choose one of two watches my uncle had after his death. One was a Seiko tt, but I took the other, a plain gold dress watch. Turned out to be a 1963 Patek!
Got a SS DJ about 2 years ago. Found myself [and wife] falling for Rolex. Recently traded the Patek for a GMT II and it's the best deal I've ever made.

Finally got one when I was 37.

Wanted a GMT when I was a boy, but went for about 15 years without wearing a watch period. Finally started wearing them again a couple of years ago and got my Rolex finally.

It looks like I'm the fossil in this group. I didn't get my first Rolex until 2005 when I was 56. I figured I'd earned it by then. Life previously had other priorities; my sailboat, new racing sails every 3 years, divorce lawyers.

Now we have 4 Rolex in the family, and counting.......

I knew about Rolex from the local wiseguys in Brooklyn NY. When me and my ex wife was going threw hell I felt I need to buy myself a gift for all my trouble I went threw with this girl. At 24 I bought a SS DJ I put a bezel and dial (done by Jacob the Jeweler). At 31 re married and bought my 2nd wife a SS DJ (Silver/diamond dial) to match mine, Bought it on our Honeymoon in Maui HI.

I bought my 15200 when I was 26... At 34, I've probably owned close to 50, but never any more than about 6-8 at any one moment.

I remember being in Mexico in the late 80's the exchange rate changed almost daily... So we kept most of our cash in dollars cause each day we could buy more pesos than the day before. I think I bought some snake-skin boots for something like 25,000 pesos at the time (about $18 US if memory serves).

The last time I visited your country was in 2006 and it was good to see the peso doing better then before.
