How would you have handled this >>>>>>>
I finally experienced an unsolicited response “out in the wild” on my LV after a month or so of ownership and I thought I would share and to see how one might respond under a similar scenario; or perhaps you’ve already experienced something similar.
So the scene occurred Friday night at a downtown Seattle bar and dance club. About an hour prior to the query while sitting at a table with buddies, a guy strolled up to the table uninvited and took an open seat. I say uninvited due to the fact that my buddies didn’t acknowledge this person while he was sitting there and I certainly didn’t know him. I will leave out some details so as to not stereotype, but all seated were dressed casual including me. Fast forward a bit, I’m talking to a couple girls while standing near the bar and the fellow walks up and interrupts by saying “Where did you get that watch?” Certainly I was taken aback a bit, surprised more than anything… Without missing a beat, the following words flowed from my mouth, China… you know the Chinese are getting better every day with the movement….at that precise moment, one of the girls standing to the front and right of me contorts her body to view my watch than bends down to take a look at the guys watch…. (appeared to me a blingy 45+mm $100 piece on a strap) and she says, “you ain’t got nothing on him ‘cause he’s got a Rolex”. The response from the guy…. “…he’s got a F – O – L – E – X” Than he looked at me and flashed a smile which I returned and than went about my business… Of course I passed the guy yet again as I was leaving the establishment and he threw out his hand and I gave him a pound.

I thought you meant you'd given him a 'pound' as in a 'buck' or a 'dollar' (& thereby officially giving him the rank of "toilet towel guy" ) but hey your way worked just as well!!

What I say, when some stranger asks where I got the watch, is that someone (either some family member or wife) gave it to me. That normally puts people at ease and stops alpha males from continuing their competitive streak.

I would never claim to own a fake unless my life was a risk. If asked where I got my watch, my reply would be "I earned it".

I hear you Dan. I did leave out some details to avoid stereo typing.... why potentially risk being set up when leaving the establishment later?

I actually think you did the right thing saying it was a fake, You don't know him from the next guy, for all you know he was doing some homework to see if he wanted to see you in the parking lot afterword for a freebie Rolex. You were smart, and possibly avoided a dangerous situation without even realizing it.

I would have said something to the effect of, "it looks like the lady has a better eye for the finer things in life than you do. She can spot a better watch, and a better man."

Oops my bad I didn't know that. I thought giving him a pound meant beating the living out of him. Cultural intricacies can be so hard sometimes

Well I have never been in this situation and I hope I never am. In this situation I think you handled it OK. I mean you came out not having to fight the guy or get your watch ripped off. I would have a hard time saying mine was fake so I may not have been as lucky as you.

Lol Rye, that type of pound still means the same
Thanks Peter, I was getting a bad vibe... and it was so sudden and a split second response on my part. I mean, who in their right mind will intrupt a conversation with a "where did you get that watch" remark not too mention he'd like floated over to the table I was sitting at...

Always better to be safe than sorry. A watch, even a Rolex, isn't worth risking life or limb. Mine are insured, they can have it if push comes to shove. dP
