Dropped watch

Yes, I've finally done it... I've dropped a watch.

The seamaster, it happened while putting in on my wrist, and it just.. somehow... slipped off and fell pretty much flat on it's caseback.... onto the kitchen tiles.

Cosmetically it's OK, there's some minor dents on the underside of the 2 lugs.
It still runs fine, and there's no abnormal 'sproing' I can hear but I'm a little concerned nonetheless.

So, let's hear from those that have dropped theirs. From what is supposedly a tough, shock-resistant sports watch, what sort of damage could occur?
I should get it checked out, I know. Shame it's not under warranty anymore

Tough call, Otis. I have never dropped a watch (yet!), but if you think it is OK, it runs fine over an extended period of time, and you can live with the slight damage you mention, I would leave it alone.

On the other hand, if you see ANY change in performance, or you keep agonizing over the cosmetic damage, I would go straight to an SC.

How's that for wishy-washy?!?

No, not wishy washy, that's pretty much what I was thinking too

I would hesitate to call it 'damage', it's character. I wear my watches, and this one's a toughy, so that doesn't really bother me with this one

I think I'll time the performance of it, see if it loses or gains any time. It was always pretty spot on, 1-2 secs a day fast, so I hope that's still OK.

Just the right medicine!

Now, i forgot mention it was on a dreaded NATO strap, so it was cushioned somewhat. After, winding it this morning, setting the time and date I can't hear/feel anything abnormal in the guts of it, so I'll give it a few days and see.

I dropped my Seiko SKX007 onto the tile floor in my washroom, and it is still running fine. Actually it has been dropped so many times.

One thing that separates the Seiko from most swiss watches is the movement ring where the Seiko uses plastic which absorbs shocks a bit more. However I think the Omega should have some incabloc shock or something that will allow for any shock absorption.

Do you know if your SMP dropped flat or at an angle?

Smack-bang-flat on it's back. It was one of those slow-motion moments when you just watch the inevitable happen and then stand around swearing

I think she's gonna be ok. The nato strap helped cushion it. At least it did not fall on the glass side, and it could have chipped. The good thing about SMP is that the glass is actually flushed, so no chipping can occur on the edges, unlike my SD and the Submariners.

I dropped my Seamaster from a height of about 1.2m onto a wooden floor, landed on the winder.
Picked it up and the hands were all loose and it rattled...
Down to the AD, I can't remember how much it cost to repair, AUD$400 or so I seem to remember..

NB to myself, don't do that with the SD or the PAM177, might cost a bit more..

Having said that it's been wacked around the glass more than a few times, on pipes and flanges and no damage to the crystal..

I dropped my SS Datejust about three years ago.

A fellow officer had just returned from a cruise and he had purchased a watch from a jewelry store aboard the ship. He brought it to work one day and proudly bragged that "that's a thousand dollar watch here guys". Sure... it was a very nice watch, but not to be outdone, I wore my Rolex the very next day.

I seeked him out, found him, and showed him my Datejust. I could see the envy in his eyes and face.

Anyway... after showing my watch to a few more people, I was attempting to put the watch back on my wrist and I dropped it. Bad watch karma maybe?

Sustained minor damage on the top right edge of the case, but you really have to look hard to see it. It still looks pretty good in my eyes.

It's still working OK. Be thankful. Drops like that can kill a watch movement if it lands in a particular way.

Otis - I dropped my Ulysse Nardin Marine Diver Chronometer going through security at the airport. My plastic container had already gone through, they told me take off the watch. Stupidly I put it on the conveyer belt, and it fell through onto the floor.
It stopped and stayed stopped. Had to give it to the tech, it took 5 weeks and cost over $300.-
Of course I felt bad, but these things just happen sometimes. Larry.

We got hit with a 30' roller heading to Dutch Harbor and it heaved us hard port, knocking me and my staff around along with everything else in the Galley. Friggin' mess.
Went up to my stateroom later to see the damage. TV was on the deck along with computer, stereo, etc. Exp II was under the smashed TV...picked up the watch and just a teeny nick near the band.
Ah, battle scars...
When I send it in next year for service it'll be good as new, ready for another round in the Bering.

in my life. I was playing doubles and my female partner hit my 1st Rolex DJ hard with her tennis racket. I quickly checked it because it was a loud pop. I started to sweat and it was fine. I took a nice warm bath with it still on and my conscience was clear .

I love that show and have gained great respect for that type of work and the people that do it. I feel like a wimp when I watch it though because I KNOW that I could never do it.

No, we do the Pollock and Hake fishery. Crabbers are in a league all their own. I'd rather work on a bigger vessel, takes the bumps a little easier

I watch that show too! Do you ever hear how much money each the workers get? Sometimes they make $30K each in one check and one time I heard of a $15K bonus check for reaching goal. If i miss a show, i catch it on on demand.
