Compared to current production, Rolex was making far fewer watches when they were making the 5513s.

This is similar to the car market. Would you buy a Boxster thinking if you hang onto it for 40 years it will give you a return like a Speedster?

I plan on hanging on to my 16610! I'll never replace it, just add more watches.

I think it's a classic, no doubt! I just don't agree with JJ that you need to hurry up and get one, as if it will skyrocket in price.

Well, like you say there are many of them around. The only facts are that production of this model will stop...........and, more importantly, there hasn't been a price hike from Rolex in a very, very long time.............and that, as you know, is inevitable!!

How about the discontinued GMT II? 16710's have been out of production a few years now. I's snatch one of those babies up first!

Your AD is so nice, mine just feeds my caffeine addiction with free espresso and tells me to buy more watches. And diamonds. And sapphires. And tanzanite.

In 20 years time I still think that a purchased 116610LN will prove to be the correct move to have bought, there is simply way to many 16610 around and even now you can buy a used 16610 for as little as 3000-3500 USD

IMHO!

cheers!

/masterkiller
Well if sales over the next 20 years for the 116610LN are as good as the 16610 over the same period. Surely there will be far to many 116610LN around
and they will have the same value as the 16610 over the same period or less. Its simple any modern day Rolex is produced in very high numbers by the millions today unless the Rolex bubble bursts. And if Rolex prices do rise by 5% what about normal daily cost of living inflation and will wages etc keep ahead of inflation.

16610 or moreso 16610LV are the way to go. If you insist on buying BNIB from an AD you won't have long to go until these are all gone. Fiddled with a 116610 today and whilst I accept it has many improvements over the 'older model' it is definitely starting to lose the classic submariner look and feel. Most of this comes down to the maxi case which is out of place on this classic watch IMO.. If you like the maxi case and ceramic bezel the GMT2c is the way to go, leave the sub the way it was. just my 2 cents...

p.s retail in oz is ~$9500!!!

Well Mike at least you could afford to stock up on 16610 inserts but the ceramic well that could be very very costly.

Well if I remember one complete bezel and insert came off a DSSD or GMT11c guy took it back to AD, but AD said it had to go back to RSC to be replaced.

I have been looking for a new or pre-owned 16610, people are asking crazy money for these. I was hoping to find a pre-owned with box and papers for $3,000 and it just is not happening. I do not think this watch will be collectible in my lifetime, however I really like it and may give in and buy new from an AD. Does anyone know of a good AD that will ship?

Nothing compares to 16610. They are too many, so what? That's what made 16610 shout the most Rolex model. If one day this model becomes collectible it's a bonus. For now and for many years to come it's a great watch to wear for any occassion. Period!

For me I guess it depends on how many you can afford. If you are looking to keep pace with the new arrivals, trading now may not be a bad idea. I too think it'll be some years before the 16610s start to appreciate.
