SUB Ceramic UK.... Hype??

Well, it's Tuesday 9am here in England, and I'm patiently awaiting my postman to knock with my 116610 LN..

The watch here in the UK lists at £4610, which is of course what I paid, no discount as you'd expect..

Interestingly though, there are & have been a number of ceramic subs on ebay (UK).. Most are asking £5490, some £4990, and one which had a start price of £4610 (list). All of these mentioned above have now ended, and not one was bought or bid on, even the one starting at list price...

Either the recession is hitting again (although it didn't affect this market a year or so back), or Rolex have simply inflated their pricing just too much... What do you guys think?

There is also 116520 Daytona's a year old selling on ebay for circa £6K (list is £6400 ish) - again, unheard of.

Maybe Rolex is just simply getting too expensive.

Hey, I'm still excited anyway

i tried on 3 in the states last week, and they seemed to all be readily avaiable

Rolex watches have always been expensive, but lately now believe they are extracting the urine.Especially now on some of the high volume sale watches, but a commodity like a watch will only sell what todays market will bare.

I agree, £4K-£4.5K will be on ebay before too long, especially if they've been used for a month or so... Rumours of October price increase too......

They have certainly priced me out of the market.

No real substance to the high asking prices.......to me a lot of fluff in the new watches. Apart from a few cosmetic changes......nothing has changed.

If they came out with a 72/84 hr power reserve, or something significant. Well maybe......something useful.

Well over the past 4 decades there has been very little changes to Rolex watches. Most of the movements have only been slightly modified, movements like the Cal 3185 into a 3186 just a minor mod.Although the current line up of movements are excellent in every way.The truth is Rolex has only developed two real new movements for Oyster watches over the past 30 years.Sure now we have the in-house escapement parts. But the main reason for Rolex and quite a few of the other Swiss brands to develop there own escapement parts is quite simple. The Swatch group that owns Nivarox the main supplier of escapement parts to the whole of the Swiss watch industry.Stated that sometime in 2010/11 they will cut off supply's of escapements parts and Ebauche movements to all outside the Swatch group.Thats the main reason that many Swiss brands are now making there own movements at a very high cost.It takes quite a bit of money to design then tool up to make a movement. But once thats done you can churn them out by the million.

You'll get one for far less on ebay.co.uk... I know of one reputable seller that will sell for £5200 at the most!

I've been promised one on the next delivery, standard or LV but I've told him not to bother phoning unless I get my usual discount.

We'll see if he does that.

IMO a Rolex Steel Sub is a £3XXX watch unless it's a couple of years old or a ND then it's a £2XXX watch.

In my experience, we had a lot of people on the waiting list, about 8 or so, but they all let us down. Either didn't respond or had already found one elsewhere. Interest has been reasonable, and it lasted less than a week in the shop, but demand is somewhat disappointing. It's a similar story with Daytonas, at least with Black Dials - 40 people on the list, not one wanted one So it went into the window on a Saturday morning, lasted 'til 11 when a passer by spotted it.

I think the answer is that the people who have been blocking up waiting lists either have got one, were only on there to flip for a profit (of course, that market is now dead), or they can't afford it. Yet, oddly, there's still a clamour for white dials. I can't get my head round it

I talked to an AD yesterday who has a Daytona sitting in the case...it's been there for about a month, he said.

more likely that speculators who thought they were gambling on reselling for a quick profit realise there is not a market for an over priced and over hyped SS model that you could have bought at half the price a couple of years ago. Rolex greedy price hikes and the economy have finally met.

While I appreciate Rolex wishes to remain an exclusive watch brand I think the price increases in the wake of one of the worse global recessions in hstory is perhaps a bad move. Yes there are many who, despite the current financial climate, have so much money they can go out a nd buy a Rolex with their loose change but much of their customer base are surely the very people who now have less disposable income in their bank accounts!

Of course I might be totally wrong and Rolex sales continue unaffected! However, I would love to know over the coming year or two if they do infact see a drop in sales and profits and whether more 'would-be' Rolex buyers turn instead to slightly cheaper luxury watch brands such as Omega.

I think these are fair comments. I'm on two AD waiting lists but I also want to see the ss sub c in the flesh before I commit.

The price is an issue for me (I am hoping a friends discount will mean i pay 85% of the mrrp) though as Rolex, despite it's perceived exclusivity, is still a mass producer.

If we do see another price rise in October and with the 20% VAT rise in the UK it may well take the sub c over the £5k mark which I think is too expensive for what it is.

Excited the see the watch in the flesh though before I push the button.

Indeed. I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing, at least people who actually want the watch can get hold of one without paying thousands over RRP, or waiting for an eternity. I'd far prefer to see the watch go to someone who genuinely wants it than someone who's looking to make a quick profit

I think in a few months we'll see the new black subs all over the place and will prob be quite easy to get at a discount from grey dealers. A UK purchased one was listed on a uk forum (tz-uk) for list price, yes £4,610, and it took at least a few days to go which surprised me as I thought it would fly off the shelf.

Yes it is a hot new model but at the end of the day the black version is just too similar to the GMTIIC (which can be bought for a big chunk cheaper) or a 16610LV with black bezel to justify the huge extra cost.

It will be interesting to see how the Ceramic LV goes in the UK. Personally I have my name down for this and will be buying it ASAP. For me it's different enough from anything else Rolex make.

The VAT increase on the current price of £4610 will take it to £4708 so if rolex decide to increase the price (either before or After the VAT) a £5k price tag is inevitable.

Seems rather pricey for a mid range ss watch IMHO. Omega PO seems like a bargin in comparison.!!!

I'm predicting pre-owned Sub-C examples should be available by end of the year in the $6500-6900 range. By early-mid 2011, they will probably get into the <$6500 range once they've been around and some more hit the market.

I am soooooo very tempted to get one now and have that intoxicating "first kid on the block" feeling, but my wallet is not cooperating with this desire at the moment.
