New or Old Models?

For me its older....I just dont care for most of the new models coming out and will stick with older GMT and Im looking at an older Explorer 1 Monday.
Just like cars and guitars I prefer my Rolex(s) to be a older/vintage model.

Myself prefer the classic case in reality not many new models from Rolex only slightly updated old ones as been the case for the last 20 plus years.The chronographs are the only real new Rolex movements sure now we have the new in-house escapement parts but that was because of pure necessity.

Personally, I think the older models look more elegant, and the new ones more elephant.

I'm a watch enthusiast first, a salesman second. I come here to learn and share my passion, not push watches. I personally don't like the feel of the older watches on my wrist

I have a certain affinity for vintage models, but I do love some of the newer models, especially the technological advances being made!

It's a tough call. On the one hand, some of the older models are iconic and classic. On the other hand, there is no other way to describe it - the old style oyster band just plain sucks. Period. What a cheap and dodgy piece of junk to be attached to an otherwise gorgeous watch. It doesn't matter if it is the sub, sea dweller, GMT Master II, Exp II or Exp 1... the oyster band seems so out of place. Hollow mid links = rattle trap. The new style oyster band is so much nicer and matches the style of the watch better.

That reason alone is why I prefer the new GMT IIc, the new Exp 1, and the new Sub-C. I actually prefer the look of the 16610 sub to the Sub-C. We'll see how the new Exp II is once it comes out.

I really like the previous generation Exp 1 and Exp II and I am frequently tempted to pick up used deals. But the thought of the cheap bracelet holds me back.

Now, if you could swap bracelets and put the new style onto the old watch head, that would be perfect!

Although I don't own any vintage pieces,I do admire them greatly an love to see the evolvment from then to now!!

Well for a piece of junk like you call it bracelets like the oyster with or without fliplock., have been on millions upon millions of Rolex watches though the past 4 decades.And when then quite a large majority were used as proper tool watches,and not like todays mainly pampered watches, myself cannot recollect any fliplock bracelet failures.But to date there has been several reported problems with the new clasps.

I'd hate to think how heavy my watch would be if the center links were any more solid than they are now.

That would not be a good thing, IMO.

I have always wanted a Rolex since I first saw them way back when, and now I finally have a couple.

I really don't have any real experience with older Rolex models but I do know my GMTIIC clasp is a whole lot better than the one on my Yachtmaster. I know I would much rather have the saphire chrystal than the older style they had previously. But I am sure the older watches had some good points as well.

I really like the watches I currently have now.

Previous style or the current style... I like them both. I really like the newly designed bracelet/clasps. Sometimes I prefer the classic submariner, and sometimes I prefer the GMT2 C. I don't own any vintage pieces, but have an appreciation for them as well.

I don't mean to get into a pissing match, but you misunderstood what I wrote.

I never said there were failures. I never said it didn't perform the way it was intended to.

What I did say is that it is a cheap, rattle trap that doesn't mesh with the rest of the watch. Just because the bracelet has been on millions of units sold has nothing to do with whether it is cheap or not. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Anyway, kudos to Rolex for redesigning it and I would take a GMTIIc and Sub-C bracelet/clasp any day of the week over the old style. The easy fit/comfort link system is awesome.

I think some of the improvements to useability seen on some new models have been a long time in comming--maxi dial etc...

Having said that the older (vintage) references have a certain look/appeal that sets them apart for me. These are pieces from an era we will never see again.

I have a 30 year old and a one year old TT DJ. The old one, having been serviced, is beautiful again. However the Jubilee band was so stretched I thought it would break. (It did two or three times). The crystal was very easy to scratch. The new Super Jubilee band and clasp is so much more solid, durable, heavy, and beautiful that there is no comparison. I like both but I wear the new one most of the time without fear it will be damaged.

I wouldn't mind buying preowned too! (Even better if it's preowned, saves me some dough!)
