Hey guys, please tell me if this seems fishy?
so TRF member notaclctr PMed me and offered to sell me his WG daytona dial black and red which most of you know, i have been looking for..
he paid 500 for the dial so i offered him that and i would pay him via paypal and assume all paypal fees shipping fees and taxes if any. he responded with this "I was just offered 750USD just for the dial on another forum. On Ebay there's a WG dial now bidding over 1000USD, and its horrible pink. Got the dial from Rolex, installed during service, so I assume Rolex use authentic parts. Dial looks flawless to me, 100% perfect using a jewellers loupe. I have a 6-year old account on ebay selling rolex parts among other things, and can unfortunately only accept bankwire where any fees are taken care of by the buyer. My original dial+hands is packed in paper-slides in rolex envelopes and the rolex metal box, that's normally how the Rolex does it overhere for shipping and packing. Officially I paid roughly 500USD for the dial but paid a 1000USD+ premium for the daytona to skip waiting list. The lowest price dial+hands will be 850USD + shipping and bankwire fees. I understand if you think this is too much, if so It'll go on Ebay. I can send you some more pictures of the dial when its been removed. Kind regards" so then i responded with this: " thanks for the reply. i understand you are trying to recover some of your losses on the daytona premium. the only thing is i have been looking at ebay for a while now and those dials you have mentioned have been up for a very very long time and have not sold due to the prices being to high over market cost. i do want the dial but it is used so please keep that in mind. i would meet you more than half way on your asking price and do $800usd but could not go a penny higher. if you listed it on ebay and got lucky and sold it. there are ebay fees to deal with. i am an avid ebay seller so i know the fees can get quite high. but i can honestly say that those dials have literally been on ebay forever. there is also a wg white and red arabic dial posted on ebay as well that has not sold for some time. if you would except 800 then let me know. i can not do wire transfer. i never do that. i'm sure you can understand that i dont know you and you dont know me. that would leave me with 0 protection. everyone uses paypal this day in age.. to be honest, i dont think there are many ppl out there who would except this transaction via bank wire. if i'm willing to assume paypal fees for you, then i dont see the harm in using it. i can say 100% any member here on TRF would not do a bank wire via any deal from someone they dont know. i already have 2 others on TRF trying to order me that dial and one watch maker in sweden who is trying to fill my order. so either way i know if i hold out, i will find one. it's only been 2 days since i actually started trying to locate one, so in a month i know it will be in my watch I wish you the best of luck. thanks again for your time and offer. cheers. PS: the only thing im confused on is that you said rolex installed the dial and swapped it for you? there is not one rolex service center in the world that does dial swaps. only out side watch makers with a high level parts account can order a dial. so maybe i miss read?" please tell me if you think i handled it right and if his message seemed a little off? thanks |

It seems like a haggle tactic.
I guess he should have said what he wanted to sell for and that should be it. If you can not come to an agreement, so be it, move on. |

I don't have a problem with the price, what seems shady is he only wants bank wire an doesn't want paypal bc of fees, I told him I'll assume all paypal fees, he avoided it and didn't answer in his response... Who would pay via bank wire to someone they don't know in another country?

Run! Seeing that you offered to pay the PayPal fees and he refused makes it clear that something is up.

I think you handled it well. Don't let him think he holds all the cards. If he can't meet you half way, then forget him. But he does seem a little flaky to me. I would proceed with caution.

Why not ask for and check references before displaying a private email conversation with another TRF member, asking if you "handled it right"?
I don't see the point.

I agree that private communication should not be shared. And I prefer bank wire for either buying or selling - a quick phone call and review of eBay acct. and/or references is usually sufficient.

$800
for what you're looking for is a steal. Don't know about over sea RSC, but you just simply can't get that here in the States. The Paypal thing is a little fishy though.
BTW: Did you have the courtesy of informing the seller that you're going post all this here? That's the least you can do for a fellow TRF member. |

I'd never do a bank wire, but seems like he's trying to haggle you into paying more, since he knows that you're wanting that dial. :)

I was charged back on paypal for 1500 for a macbook I sold a while back and I refuse to use it these days.. I've wired thousands [Hey we prob all have at this point, right?] never had an issue as a buyer as I get all the comminque in line/in writing with some type of trail in advance.
So there are some of us that just don't want to use it for one reason or another.. but to be honest.. I'd have my sister use her account if it was a deal breaker.. hahaha.. |

Nothing wrong with haggling, I reckon it's healthy if done in a professional manner.
It's not your problem if he's paid a premium for the Daytona....it's got nothing to do with the dial's he's trying to sell nor has it got anything to do with the 'Horrible' WG dial that's currently on bid for US$1000. The focal point is this dial he's trying to sell. If you're not desperate, stick to your guns. I strongly recommend paypal as well |

You agreed to absorb PP fees and he balked, seems questionable to me. I'd move on.

Walk away, one red flag is one to many for me. Plus his wording in his response seems to be a CYA comment.

Yeah I think private communication shouldn't made public like this. If you don't like the deal then move on. You said it yourself that you had others on the lookout for you. I know it probably isn't your intention but this kind of topic can easily lead to a misunderstanding and give the other person somewhat of a bad rep. If you must post something like this the very least you can is not point out the exact person when explaining the situation. Just my 3 cents.

I agree 100%..."handling it right" is asking for and checking references. I would not buy a Rolex part with cash, wire transfer or paypal if the seller did not have excellent references that I could verify. As far as the price, if he really wants to sell the dial and you really want to buy it, it should not be so difficult to make a mutually beneficial transaction. Good luck...I hope both parties find what they are looking for. |
