Ebay Rolex

Hello Rolexers. Hopefully someone can answer a question for me. I have never bought a Rolex from Ebay but I'm thinking about doing so. I am really worried about getting a fake. If I were to get a fake from Ebay am I out of luck or will Paypal refund my purchase. I have been using Ebay for years without a problem but I have never made a 8k purchase on Ebay. Thanks for any help folks.

I believe Paypal will stand behind the buyer on Ebay purchases but there's a dollar amount limit, and I think it's significantly below 8K so be careful.

I have made a purchase on Ebay using PayPal but it was for 3.5k I bought a DateJust and the item was not the same as in the picture so I alerted PayPal and they helped me get my money back but as HHH007 said there is a limit.

Why dont you buy from one from one of the trusted sellers here on TRF, i would feel alot safer than buying off e-bay, just a thought if you are going to part with $8k.

As rolexexplorer2 mentions, buy from one of the trusted guys here on TRF, I plan to go that route next month, they will definately give you a good deal! I have bought and sold on Ebay for years and have had very little trouble, you just have to be careful and do a little research. There are several reputable sellers such as generalwar, demesy jewelers, time & gems, etc. Don't buy from a seller with very few(or even 0!) feedbacks! Check their feedback ratings and see how many Rolex watches they have previously sold. Paypal has regulations governing what and how much they will cover, you can check it on the Paypal link, that'll tell you everything you need to know. Good Luck!

My thoughts:

1. General principle is to not buy at all any items of high value or items prone to copying.

2. If you must, not sure why when better deals exist all overvthe net, then ensure it Is a dealer/retailer. They should be contactable by phone.

3. Contact those they have sold to. Not a total guarantee, but adds security.

4. Don't impulse buy. Anywhere, ever, especially when browsing Ebay with a beer in hand!

5. ignore the above, walk into an AD with balls out and get a deal. Or try a reputable seller on here, there are some strong references by members.

I don't think anyone here would recomend a Rolex ebay purchase. It's pretty difficult to identify a fake as it is let alone gurantee that you actually will get the watch pictured in the first place. I personally have purchased all of my Rolexs' directly from an AD just for those reasons. However if I were to purchase any Rolex from the internet would more than likely be from the buy site here.

As MJ Says ensure you can contact the dealer or person by phone if he is dealer with a shop but tradeing online via ebay then I'd say thats a safer bet than some unknown. Is there any chance you can collect the item and make payment then if he is a dealer?

But be cautiuos. Ebay isn't always the best source for a bargain

So far, I bought all my Rolexes brand new at a reputable AD, never bought a used one and surely never will buy one via e-bay or other services.

The risk of getting a fake is simply too high. And paying several thousands of $ for a fake, well that hurts!

And one last point: Before I buy a new Rolex, I have to see it in flesh.

If you are truly considering ebay buy one from our guys here. They care about their reputation and there will be no surprises. The watch community doesn't call it fleabay for nothin'. Ebay is great for lots of things, but not A ROLEX.

There may be eBay of PayPal buyer protection, but as was already pointed out there are conditions that must be adhered to and may be limits. Having used the protection myself, I can tell you it's not just as simple as filing a claim and getting a refund the next day.

That said, the trusted TRF sellers are better to deal with and their prices are normally much better than eBay prices.

I have purchased and sold lots of books on eBay, but no longer buy anything on eBay unless I can afford to lose the amount I plan on spending. My limit is about $50. Now I purchase all my books from dealers. I do pay more (sometimes), but I get an accurate description from a seller who stands behind his merchandise.

I would never spend 8K on eBay.

Stay away from ebay. It took me 7 months to get back a several K purchase and it was a nightmare. I am new here but in taking time to read about the sellers on here and actually purchasing a watch last week from here, I say go with someone others know well and you can talk to by phone from TRF sellers. You will go though sleepless nights on an ebay purchase, first wondering it it will come and then wondering if it is real until you get to an AD. Then you could, like a friend of mine did, find out its indeed a real case but tha is about all. Stay away from ebay in my opinion. You will be much happier in the long run to buy from a trusted seller on here.

I have bought and sold items on Ebay, with a $ limit of $500. Be very very careful. Also, if you check out their prices, you can do better, and safer, right here on the Forum. Contact David SW or other sellers and you will deal with a legitimate dealer at a better price than Ebay.

Like many others here, I look at watches all the time on Ebay and have even considered buying one of them from time to time. But after reading about all the fakes in the "Watchout" section, I've learned that I have a lot more to learn.

I have bought and sold high-end watches for years on Ebay and different watch forums. If you do all your homework and are super careful, asking the right questions and making sure the seller has a spotless reputation, then you can get very good deals on Ebay at times. However, you can also get great deals elsewhere. My point is that I wouldn't automatically dismiss a deal because it's on Ebay. Just be a very careful shopper, whether it's on Ebay or anywhere else.

I have bought several on ebay. Most of the time with good outcomes. I have had a couple of issues with fakes but they were handled well between ebay, paypal and my credit card company. I also have an advantage living in Dallas as each one I have purchased I take to the service center for a service estimate which provides a great deal of information, documentation and proof.

The worse issue I had was a fake datejust. It looked ok and Rolex even said the case, crystal, bezel crown and I think hands(?) were real. But that was all. When I took it to the service center I got it back 20 minutes later with the information that the movement was an ETA not an inhouse and the dial was "aftermarket". It was a essentially a tudor in a rolex case. Using the paperwork from rolex I contacted the seller. Got a response, apology and an offer to refund 50% of my money. Obviously that was not acceptable and I filed a report with ebay and disputes with paypal and my bank. KEY item here, you MUST use a credit card. If you let paypal debit your bank account, you are subject to their limits and will NOT get a full refund!
As a requirement of my bank I had to return the watch to the seller with proof of attempt. After a 3 week waiting period and proof of return attempt (requires you use UPS or FedEx). The bank issued a full refund. I was out the $12 return shipping but it wasn't a total loss as the seller refused delivery so the watch was returned to me!

I did get a nasty notification from Paypal as they do not like credit reversal, but you can ignore that. They took no negative action as they must comply with the card brand mandates and practices.

Key items from all this.
- Use credit card
- Have documents and proof, rolex service center is the best. And it's free.
- You may have to return the item as part of the dispute, you must use a service that provides tracking AND proof, so pay extra for the signature required. Again UPS and FedEx are preferred.
- Finally, follow ebay, paypal and your bank guidelines and requirements.

You will need to be patient as it can take a up to 3-4 weeks. Also ebay and paypal have waiting periods which I do not feel are reasonable when dealing with large funds. Ultimately the refund will be thru your bank.

So many horrible, HORRIBLE stories on Trf about eBay transactions gone awry.

#1 I would never buy any thing more than few hundreds on eBay.
#2 Twice PayPal let me down and I was lucky that I paid PayPal using my Credit Card and that saved me both times.

A Rolex isn't something you should obsess about getting the cheapest price. So far, I have only bought from an AD. I figure if I can afford a Rolex I am happy to pay a little premium to have the peace of mind of knowing I got the real deal.

I would buy face to face via eBay at an AD dealer to get it checked out in front of me...other then that I would buy from here first then an AD Dealer.

There no cheap rolex on eBay if you are going to get rip off!!!
