why is the bezel WG on a SS watch?
i am always seeing watches for sale especially the datejusts that are SS but the bezel is WG
is there a reason for this as it would be cheaper to do it in SS and to be honest who would know the difference? |

You get a fluted bezel if it is gold. Fluted looks good and shimmers. It is also identifiable as gold because of the fluted/gold combo being exclusive I believe.

Leaving the gold out would make the watch cheaper. But when you buy a rolex cheapness isn't the main priority.
It was important to me to have some gold in the watch. On the rare occassion people ask me about it it is one of the things I tell them about it. You can get the DJ with a domed steel bezel if you don't want any gold so the option is there. Each to there own. Best regards |

I may be wrong but it's my 1000th post so I must be right. Steel and platinum are too hard to put through the process of machining in order to produce the fluted look. I believe that is why platinum day-dates only have smooth bezel or diamond bezel options.
And to answer your question, the most important person would know that it's gold instead of steel-You.

I have been told that gold gives better reflection compared to steel. And its a plus value to have it so you at least get some "noble metal" in your steel watch..

According to Rolex, the fluted bezel is a key signature of a Rolex and only made available in gold - white, yellow, rose.

It's funny...the first time I really noticed the difference in metal between the WG bezel and the SS of the watch was when I saw the photos my appraiser took for insurance purposes. He put the watch in a white light box and took a photo with a harsh flash. The gold was clearly a different shade.

There have been SS bezels machined in other patterns. Hell, they can machine out a whole case from SS; I don't think a bezel would be that difficult (and we won't go into my mechanical engineering background that includes material science. ). I have no doubt Rolex wants to be sure people know that their customers ponied up the extra $$ for the WG. |

I've seen metal cutting machines at metal engineering shops; your watch maker doesn't know what he is talking about. With the precision cutting machines out there driven with CAD software, cutting a bezel would be child's play. I've seen these machines cut amazingly detailed steel models of cars and other equipment that make a bezel look simple. BTW, this was 13 years ago, so I can imagine the technology is even better today. The only explanation that seems logical is that Rolex is utilizing exclusivity to drive sale prices. People have mentioned before that this was why they never made a steel DD as well...
