opinions on all gold vs SS Daytona..

I have been reading many reviews on this forums for a while. I was just curious to find out why most prefer SS. I know there is a huge price difference no question, however based on some of the post money seems no object for some. I know SS appeals to the rugged tool watch origins of a sport watch.
My question is more directed to the Daytona white gold on a strap with can be had for a little more than a stanless 14k vs 11k ?

Is the SS the only potential for collectibility in the future or more "desired piece" because of a lack of availability?

I prefer the gold as well. I couldn't care less what might have better resale value in 20 years. I buy what I want and keep it. SS Daytonas are not going to be rare collectibles. The Zenith movement will probably continue to command a premium.

If $$$ are not a problem all gold but yet it depends on your age and what do you do...
the demand on SS is high since it can be worn everyday some guys think that gold is a little 2 much for an everyday use...
But yet it's a daytona after all

Afraid the collectivity of the Daytona finished around 2000 with there introduction of the cal 4130 in house movement. The S.Steel Daytona IMHO is purely a fashion thing and it was hard to get at retail.Myself cannot see what the fuss was over the S.steel Daytona you only have a black or white dial option. But they was hard to find at retail but quite easy if you was willing to pay a premium. Now perhaps thats why they are sort after, owning something thats was hard to get.But now there must be quite a few S.steel Daytona's in this world today, but whether TT, or precious metal, its exactly the same movement. The only real collectible Rolex Daytona's don't even have a Rolex movement inside but ones from Zenith and ETA Valjoux.

The days of getting a SS Daytona for $3,000+ under the street price from your authorized dealer is long, long, gone. The street price and retail price are now the same. Not so exciting anymore to find one. But, the SS Daytona I would say still has the most amount of retaining it's value than any other modern Rolex.

The SS is better as it more wearable and has the ' You know I paid too much cos it's hard to get ' factor. The gold and SS/YG are very easy to get, even pre-owned, and look bit too flash. The rose gold though is a different story.....

Thanks, Interesting point....

Fashion..... Local AD told me that most of his cutomers who have purchased daytona have been women!

White gold on strap looks like SS to the untrained Eye. Could be win, win

I had a chance to wear my friends SS Daytona while he wanted to wear my AP ROO. I would go with a gold daytona over the SS anyday if it is within your budget.

I definitely prefer the gold versions - but NOT because it's simply gold. I just find the dials on the gold versions to be much nicer than the SS. If they offered all dial combos in SS - then I'd actually prefer the SS, as an every-dayer.

The YG is making a strong comeback after a decade plus of being shunned.

It all depends on who you are and where you live, I think a YG Daytona with a white dial looks great, especially in Miami, Malibu or Bev Hills!

I love the gold versions but seeing the huge price difference, I think its diffiult to compare..If price was no issue..definitly the gold version....but im glad there are 'affordable' SS versions for some of us here!

The Rose Gold would be the one I would get if I were to buy a Daytona in Gold. I just prefer Rose Gold over Yellow Gold or White Gold.

I've had both versions of the SS Daytona. I bought my first SS Daytona at a substantial premium in Singapore in 2002. My latest one was bought at just under MSRP in Tokyo. The "premium" price and MSRP are now pretty much the same.

Though the SS Daytona is a great watch, heads above most of the competition IMO, I much prefer the gold Daytona models. They look better, feel better, and have a better variety of dials. I prefer YG. WG is OK, but too close to SS for me. The current RG used by Rolex is way too pink/red for me. I like the older RG tones better.

I actually like the simplicity of the choice offered with the SS models. They are not trying to be anything. Most gold/TT models ate trying too hard for me. Way too busy. The straight forward dial choice of white or black gives the SS their strong position IMO. Like a restaurant that doesn't overcrowd the menu. Less is more with SS. My SS white is a favorite of mine.

Not a big fan of yellow gold, but saw a zenith black dial solid gold daytona and it was stunning. I hope someday in the future to own one.

SS Rolex sport models have better re-sale averages (based on MSRP) but as far as the Daytona goes, it's a toss up. Rich mature looking guys like gold or two tones while younger active guys like SS or white gold. I have two all gold Rolexes and I don't wear them and can't sell them for sentimental reasons. Essentially, they're out of mind.

I would go for a rose gold daytona. Only because I already own a ss daytona. Im not a fan of the wg daytona because its like a ss daytona only you paid a whole lot more for it. Sure the dial is a little different. But not enough to warrant the price difference.

My first choice would be YG.

Thankfully, they come in all flavors.
