Need advice

I'm buying a pre-owned Rolex oyster perpetual datejust watch for my husband's 60th birthday and I need advice fast! The one I found has a champagne dial with stick numbers; however, I can change to the cream color dial with roman numerals. I like the latter one better, but what would men prefer now? He is not the dressy type, but for some reason, I don't like the champagne dials. Please help!!!

dials are easy enough to change, just make sure to keep the original dial, for possible resale later...

Tough, it's all preference. Personally, I don't like cream or champagne. I like white, navy blue, or black. Again, that's just me. Here's mine.

Everyone's taste is different. You probably know your husband's taste best. Regardless of which you get I'm sure he'll appreciate it. ( if you prefer the cream then that is fine. Roman numerals can be very classy)

Have you considered one of the sport models? If he is not the dressy type, he might enjoy one of these. An Explorer might fit the bill if you think he would prefer this basic style, and it is the same size.

Its a very understated watch that can fit any attire from cut offs to Tuxedos. Just a thought, but second hand you could find a nice one at a very similar price as well.

Frankly I prefer the champagne dial, however everyones taste are different. As stated previously you probably know your husbands taste better than we do.

Do you have the option to buy and make a dial choice later, then this way you could give it to him and then ask him what he wants to do without ruining the suprise.

Thanks for all the feedback. He's had a Rolex before, but we found out this disputable jeweler used after market Rolex pieces and never had it pressure tested. How is a pressure test performed? I'm so scared of doing the wrong thing, or buying the wrong Rolex, since we had such a bad experience. What should I ask for? The one I am buying is a 1993 perpetual oyster datejust, self-winding, quick set with a jubilee two-tone band-all original parts with a saphire crystal. I've just put a down-payment on it. What do you suggest?

As long as you went to a reputable dealer, and hopefully this one is an AD then you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

What is an AD? I've done so much research and still feel I don't know enough and this is so special.

AD = Authorised dealer for Rolex watches.

Best way to relieve your anxiety over buying a pre owned watch is to buy it from an Authorized Rolex dealer in your town. You will pay more for it - but you will know it is 100% real. You should also buy it with a warranty and minimum 3 day return privelege - so your husband and you can go back and get a 100% full cash refund if necessary or an exchange for another model or dial color.

Just a thought about dial contrast/readability - the cream dial with roman numerals might be easier to see than the champagne/stick combination.

I prefer the cream or white dial over the champagne. I also think that Romans are very classy and more modern looking. Good advice about buying from an AD. Good luck on a wonderful tribute to your husband.

Unfortunately I am not buying this from a certified Rolex dealer, but at least someone I trust. However, I always lean on the safe side and before totally committing to buy this, could you advise me of any questions to specifically ask?

i would buy from a trusted seller here on TRF. someone like DavidSW or BodyBump. I would also suggest Jon Todd at Sant Blanc, generalwar is his ebay ID.

A colleague of mine wears a DJ with the cream face and roman numerals and although it looks nice I actually prefer the champagne dial.

Also when choosing a dial I think you have to take the bracelet in to consideration too. Something tells me it will be the Jubilee bracelet on the one you have seen?!

In regards to the Roman numerals... again they look nice, but my preference would be the stick markers as that for me seems more classic.

Whatever option you decide to go for I'm certain he will be over the moon. It's a really lovely gift that you are giving him and you certainly have the actual model spot on!

What a great lady you are to buy your man such a magnificent gift. I think he will be happy with which ever watch you buy him. As already stated if you do change the dial keep the other one because he may like it better and if needed this way you can convert it back to its original condition. As long as you trust this seller you shouldn't have a problem but there are many trusted sellers here on TRF if you so chose to check them out!!!

Again, thanks so much for all your comments. I feel a whole lot better. Your advice has been wonderful. I don't know if this watch has been cleaned and checked. Where do you recommend I send it? As you can tell, I don't buy many Rolex watches. Any, in fact. I guess that's obvious.
