Depth Ratings on Rolex
Has anyone wondered why Rolex doesn't put the real depth rating on their watches? I mean they changed the sub from 200m to 300m. The GMT's are only good for 50m (I bet a lot more). Do they just not care because they know no one will take it down that far?
I'm just curious because I would like my watch to have the biggest number on it possible!!!!! Imagine a SD with 10000ft!!!!! I just checked out Breitling's site and they say their SuperOcean is good for 5000ft. I know the SD is tougher than that one. |

I believe the GMT is rated at 100m/300ft.

Maybe Rolex can go past 10000 ft, in a submarine but.

Our watches may be rated for those depths but us humans are not. So what's the point?

No campany is going to rate a product at its absolute max. Say that the sub could go to 2000ft and then it fails at 2001ft. Rolex can not rate or rather will not rate it 2000ft, if they rate it for a 1000ft then they know for sure it will not fail up to this rating. Based on my experience and knowledge of engineering everything will have a safety factor built in. I would feel safe saying nothing is rated to its absolute maximum for these reasons.

GMT is 100m or 330 ft. But I have only been to about 110-120 ft. Its all kind of silly. My 850i bmw is computor limited to 155 mph, again I won`t see it.
