A little bit confused with all the models...

Hi,

I have been taking an interest in Panerai lately but have been confused with all the different models and varieties being offered. I do know the basics such as the manual and automatics, the sausage dial vs. the sandwich dial, base models, etc. but am not sure if all the Luminors have the basic case shape and if they all sit on the wrist the same way (for the 44mm ones).

Is there a general way for me to know (say, by the model number---000's, 100's, 200's, etc or the series) what the particular watch is in terms of specs?

Any thoughts would be much appreciated....

Thanks!

Give this a try and see how you go with it.

PAM's don't provide a system when it comes giving their watches a reference # , but you'll get the hang of it before you know it.

Just take your time and look around is the best I can offer.

They do NOT all wear the same.

The auto's are usually thicker than the manuals, 45mm Rads wear smaller than 44mm Luminors. 44mm 1950's wear bigger, etc and so on. If you get a chance to try on a PAM, try it and just try to remember it. Like a 359 will wear like a 312 and a 112 will wear like a 005 and a 305 wears like nothing else. Just try on as many as you can and then find a face you like! It is hard, but fun!

I'm sure in time I'll get the hang of it, but it sure is fun learning about all the types/models.

Thanks for the advice guys, I really appreciate it!

A few months ago I went looking for a table listing model numbers on one axis and price, case style, case polish, case material, lug style, strap, dial type, dial color, GMT, chronograph, second hand, small second, power reserve, crown protector and on and on on the other axis. Such a table would allow you to pick your must-have features (for me it was tobacco sandwich dial, second hand of some sort and non-polished case) and then choose which of the highlighted models suit you best.

With all the variations I assumed something like this just must exist. No such luck.

Anyone seen anything like it? If not, maybe it is time for a collaborative effort?

I have actually gotten almost all of it - i hope...the only thing which i am still confused up to now (to think i already have 3 PAMs!!) is the difference between painted and sandwiched dials!!!!!

I just could not see the difference or it is just too subtle for me...is it just me or what. can someone explain to me again (for the 1,000th time as i've read the definition over and over) that it is what's in my mind?

Hi...imagine a dial with two layers---one is superluminova and on top of it your black dial. Now imagine cutting out portions of the black dial (the 12, 3, 6 and the index markers). The resulting dial is a sandwich dial.

A painted dial is a standard black dial with painted markers.

Hope this clears things a bit.

Also go and get hold of a couple of Panerai catalogs from your nearest AD.

It's random, and I never get the number in my head except for a few that I've owned. The best way is to hang out around the forums and you usually get to know it by time.

Have to disagree...
The Radiomirs wear/LOOK bigger though slimmer due to the large dial and slim bezel.
Though the luminors are thicker, their dial is smaller with a larger bezel which makes them APPEAR smaller.

Back to topic, Panerai never put any thought into a systematic numbering/referencing for their models...
Stallone should have thought about this before he started endorsing them...
:p
