When I screw down the crown, it will only travel about 1/3 - 1/2 revolution from when it grips the threads until it maxes out, or tightens (similarly, when I unscrew it, 1/3 - 1/2 turn and it pops out). Are the threads in the crown worn out, or is this the normal amount of travel? Is there something inside the crown other than gold, which is of course a soft metal? I do understand that the proper answer is "Send it in to Rolex and be done with it already!" but in the meantime, does anyone know? 8.5 mil serial.

Howdy the older crowns are a brass, gold capped affair and should be replace as a pair case tube and crown. The newer monoblock crowns have stainless steel threads and usually just the tube needs to be replaced when worn. When was the last service done? It sounds like it might be time for a full service. Just had exactly the same problem on my Sub bought in 1988, the crown and tube was replaced and had a full service also, Now takes a few turns to lock the crown down.
