Help me identify a vintage
Hello everyone. I am hoping someone might be able to identify the following Rolex and estimate a value (ballpark). I have a small collection but mostly new models (both Rolex and others) and I know very little about vintage pieces. My wife bought it in NY and gave it to me as a gift. I love the watch and wear if often but I know very little about it. It runs great so haven't had a need to take it in for servicing so hoping someone here might be able to identify it via a few pics. Through a little online research it could be a 1954 Model 6580 but was hoping someone might confirm this or offer other opinions. I believe she paid something in the $1500-$1800 range so hopefully that was an ok buy. If not, I will keep the estimate too myself! Thanks in advance for any information or thoughts.
Also, it is steel with an acrylic crystal on an aftermarket band. Last edited by cwilson13; 24 August 2011 at 12:19 PM.. Reason: Additional info. |

Looks nice, am not sure if that's a Rolex pre Explorer with a honeycomb dial, am sure some others more knowledgeable on these will quip in.

Welcome to TRF! Nice watch, but the dial may be relumed & refinished. If the dial is refinished as I think it is, it's a $1100-$1300 watch. Either way though, it looks great!!!

Thanks for the feedback. Its a great looking watch but a agree its a bit of a mystery. I have seen similar watched online but nothing that seems to be an exact match. I will probably take in and have an AD's service person look at it and open it up.

Just wondering if your certain that the model is a 6580 ?
if you look between the lugs at the top of the watch, you will find a reference number engraved below the words "Modele depose" Can you confirm the number ? The reason I ask is that it does look like a 6098 |

Not sure at all on whether its a 6580. I found a comparable online they had listed as a 6580 that closely resembles mine. But for all I know they could be mistaken on their listing. Here is the link to that listing. http://www.coolvintagewatches.com/Wa...LX23_views.htm
I looked at the markings on mine and this is what i can make out without a loop: between lugs at 12 (BREVET) and between lugs at 6 (22904). Does that help answer anything? Thanks for the help. |

To find out the model number, you need to have a close look at the numbers (assuming that they are there) below the word BREVET. YOu may need a loupe. If the numbers have been scratched off(due to use/ wear), the only other way to determine the model is to remove the case back. I have attached a photo of a case back with a similar serial 22XXX (5 digit)to yours. cheers Mark |

You nailed it! Mine is a 6284 just like the one in your photo. After removing the band, I could make out the numbers. So the mystery is solved. Any idea on value? Regardless, I feel richer already having learned a little about my watch and the vintage side of things. Thanks for your help.

The 6284 is not a bad watch to have.IMO, the price paid was fair. I would enjoy that watch, she is quite a beauty and I would be proud to wear her on my arm ! Mark |
