Rolex flexing is muscle
Hey guys
Just had a bit of a giggle I wanted to share with you. In my travels in the UK came across some Rolex back boards and managed to get my hands on two sets of the Brass ROLEX lettering and crown that were from the back boards See the pic. I have had if floating around for a bit and decided to sell it as I needed the cash so I popped it on Ebay. I have just received a rather nasty email after the bidding went past $100 that Rolex has requested it be pulled as its counterfeit goods. And its copy right infringement WTF! I know that Rolex don't like display material out on the free market but has any one heard of that before? |

Well, technically speaking, the backboards were never the property of the AD - they're property of Roldeco (the subcompany that manufactures display material), and merely leased to each AD. Any display material has to be returned or destroyed when it becomes obsolete. I'd be pretty annoyed if I was in Rolex's position too, to be quite honest

I believe that they were in an auction lot from a big british Jeweller that went under they ended up in a charity shop So I grabbed it and some PP Display that I sold with no issue. Just surprised That Rolex is being so Shitty
Its funny that they have used the counterfeit angel to enforce their own in company policy. At no point was there any markings that said this remained the property of Roldco ect |

Its still kinda crazy that they will spend time and money stopping Rolex lettering being sold when you go to Bangkok and the Fakes are on every street corner. I don't understand the logic of it!
Would you not promote the second hand market it will only add to the lure and value of the brand Look at Coke their signs are iconic. Or is it that Rolex now want total control over all their product New and Old ! |

They can watch all they want. It's not counterfeit. Boo hoo, someone has our old display materials. The dunce sending angry letters doesn't understand that the person buying that item is probably a Rolex nut with 5 watches.

That's exactly the point. They pay an attorney to send threatening letters to innocent people who are not involved in counterfeit merchandise. Omega is actually worse. They seem to think they own the exclusive rights to the Greek letter omega. If my history is correct, the Greek alphabet preceded the omega watch company by about 2800 years.

Well my take on it is that advertising is advertising Rolex have done all they can over the years to make the brand as desirable as possible, then people want the desired items and Rolex bends over back wards to stop the desired items being out there. They created the monster are they trying to put a leash on it?

Who is the email from? Is the email from a Rolex domain?
Tell them to mail you an official cease and desist letter or go blow. |

What I don't get is you see 100s of things on Ebay with Rolex advertising on them... display cases, watch holders etc. Why is this such a big deal?

I'm just showing the other side of the argument. Rolex don't go around telling people to stop selling items without good reason, and it's usually advisable to stop when they say. They're very protective of their images and copyrights. Dumb or not, that's how it is.

I was wondering the same thing, Paul. I can only assume this item hit closer to home for Rolex (i.e. it is actually a legitimate product) and they don't want people making money from its sale. Just a guess...

How can you be sure that its actually Rolex that want the auction pulled ?
Perhaps it was just some idiot with nothing better to do other than report your listing as counterfeit ? |
