Not really, I know your $ amount is exaggerated but I know what you mean. I'm not a big fan of expensive clothing but I can tell you for sure that my Rolex watches are real. It's a cliché, but never judge a book by it's cover I guess....

I think the moral of this thread is that there are tons of fakes out there.
I was in my barber shop the other day and I had my Breitling on. The guy cutting my hair commented on it and said he knows a guy that comes in all the time with Breitling and Rolex fakes and will spend a few hours and sell 6 or 8 watches to their customers in a few hours. $250-400 a each. He'll buy lunch for the barbers so they don't tell the boss, who is never there. |

I think the moral of the story is there are a lot of people out there who like a good quality Rolex. More so than fakes...I see way more real ones than fakes.

Couldn't disagree more! Thats a very steriotypical thing to say.. Ok maybe it was fake, but what does working in a gas station and wearing cheap clothes have to do with it? The owner of the store where I work also works part time in a supermarket. She wears a 18k ladies pearlmaster caked in diamonds... some may think thats fake but little do they know what business she owns. NEVER judge people

It's very comical that ppl seem to think because a person is in a suit and he's wearing a Rolex means he's very successful while a person who wears shorts/t-shirt who happens to sport a Rolex and quickly assume it's a fake. I know plenty of ppl who wears t-shirts/shorts to work everyday that owns multiple Rolexes and they are business ppl who owns construction companies, gas stations, business developers. I work at a gas station, in mater of fact, I work at 3 gas stations - all in Houston Texas. We own the gas stations. My dad wears a rolex, my mom wears a Rolex and I own 2. I work in shorts/t-shirts and the only way you get me to wear a suit is when we are closing a deal on a station or I have to get in front of a judge cause I am sueing my sub-contractor for not meeting his end of the bargain. Moral of story? Never judge a book by it's cover!! Ppl from all walks of life owns a Rolex or will own 1 one day...just appreciate the hard work and time/investment they put in to obtain one. Yes there are fakes, but unless you can specifically tell the difference, never assumed they are fake by what attire they wear. |

I have found that the people with money don't spend it, those with 'not that much' do
Unfortunately I'm in the latter group |

I did try on your gmtII-c last Friday---It's the nicest new Rolex in my opinion, though it's twice the price of an older GMTII... Everytime I try on the new GMTII-C I am in awe of the bracelet, the sparkle, the feel of the movement hands, the newer bezel...You are lucky and wise to own such an incredible looking watch.

At least two subway rides of ~30mins each per day. Yeah, now that I own a Rolex I'm constantly on the look out for others.
It being NYC, I tend to see a few here and there.

it is a mass produce item. sure u will notice rolex everywhere.
u see a lot of people wearing rolex, and u do not like it. it is totally ok. 99.999% male will look for a female. hopefully u are not the 0.0001% by the way. i truly respect bolt+bolt or nut+nut combination. everybody has their choice. |

I was browsing the 'For Sale' section earlier today and it struck me that there are some really modestly priced Rolex watches for sale, that are affordable by any working bloke who really wants one. It hit me that a $7K watch is no big deal when there are many that are $20K plus. For me, the price point that really separates the wealthy from the rest is when the watch costs more than a new family car.

Checkout guy at Whole Foods the other day had on a SS Daytona...
... with a racing flag engraved on the back. Guy sitting across from me on the bus had on a DJ... that ticked. But, yeah, you can spot a lot of them, real or fake. I was at a BD party for one of my kids' classmates this weekend and the father had on a Polar Expy2. Our discussion of it was brief -- once I learned his mum got it for him as a graduation present I just complimented her taste and let any of the wis-talk go. |

The bottom line is that they just are not so expensive or exclusive that a so-called average person cannot afford them. If that gas station kid was driving a $5000 car, most people would say, "sure, makes sense." However, these people would not feel the same if he had on a $5000 used Sub. Why not, 5 grand is 5 grand. Maybe the kid likes Rolex's more than all of us combined and chose to spend a larger portion of his income on one. Maybe he works at a gas station because he wants to, and has a million bucks in the bank. In my field, I work with alot of people who look and act destitute. You would be shocked at how many have bigger bank accounts that their "upper-middle class" neighbors.

If an individual wishes to spend their hard earned dollars on a fake that will last only a few years I say let them have the misfortune of having a watch that is inferior in every way... My only concern is getting through grad school so I can one day post some handsome wrist shots on this forum and enjoy the fruits of my labor for years to come :)

Rolex started as an everyday reliable watch and turning to a luxury item. I wear my sub lv everyday and love it.

I'm currently saving for a sub no-date. I've wanted one for years and finally being able to save for one is fantastic. I already have a vintage Oyster Precision (1952) that is spot on. Although, being vintage, I don't wear it much for fear of it getting banged up. I'm rather hard on my watches and a sub will fill that need nicely.
Don't see too many Rolex around these parts, but I do see many just south in Toronto. Oh, and to the OP... Nice Tag 1000 in your avatar. I have the Black Coral version. :) Cheers, B.

In the UK rolexes are not very common.
I work in a bank in London and a few guys have rolexes, but far more have omegas - especially Planet Oceans and bond Seamasters. I see the odd rolex here and there on the Tube or whilst out and about but still not many (unless you're in Harrods at the time). I occassionally see people with Breitlings too (I've seen quite a few navitimers and one BlackBird) - again not too often. Maybe Rolexes in the US are so much cheaper than here that everyone can afford them Although it's probably just that good fakes are easier to come by... Darwen. |

The flip side of this discussion is that many, many people who can clearly afford one or more rolexes choose instead to buy copies. I know this because I know several of these people, and they unabashedly admitted that they were wearing copies. They felt had nothing to prove to themselves or others by having the real thing, and they came to the conclusion that spending $7000 on a stainless steel watch was not in line with their financial sense. Same with LV purses, etc.
It is sometimes the guy who cannot easily afford a genuine Rolex who yearns and saves for one, and then proudly wears it and never considers flipping it and never gets bored of it. |
