Good question! I have always wondered a true answer. I purchased a GMT IIc last week and actually met a older lady (friend of my family) whom I had not seen in years. Said she had been at the AD for 15 years! I asked her off to the side if I had let her know before hand if she could have gotten me a deal, since I paid MSRP minus the sales tax. She said that she prob could not have because they were so strict. Granted, she was not a close family member, I'm not sure if it was true or not. Curious to see the replies!

I recently had a discussion about this with the manager of my AD. According to him, Rolex allows for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for AD employees to purchase a Rolex at Cost - 20%. That is AD's COST, not RETAIL PRICE, minus 20%. Again, employees should decide smart because once they make a pick, that will be it for the duration of the employment with any AD.

The catch: Rolex engraves their initials on the back of the casing.

I then asked him, for example, how much he would get a Black Sub for (that goes for $8K). He did some numbers on his head and came up with $4200.

AD markup is 40% off, another 20% off is a total of 60% off, which means a black Sub should only be $3200 according to your methodology...

I have a close friend in that category and the answer is no, I can usually get a better deal from a stranger because I can push a stranger harder in closing the deal than I can with a friend. I get good but not great deals from my friend. What I get that is special, though, is getting to meet the US director for Lange, getting to see and hold tourbillon watches worth a quarter of a million made for heads of state, access to limited edition and new releases, and often, free servicing. All of that is worth a 10 percent discount versus a 20 percent discount.

If AD markup is 40% then the cost to AD is $4800 (based on $8000 MSRP)
Another 20% off AD cost would be $3840

40% off then another 20% is NOT 60% off overall...

I could be wrong, but the way he quoted it is open to interpretation. It could be 60 off or 40 off and another 20 on the remaining 60.

It's 40% off retail which is dealer cost, then 20% off that. Just like above:

$8000 Retail minus 40% = $4800.00
$4800.00 minus 20% = $3840.00 plus there is a small shipping charge.

20% off of dealer cost? Why would an AD lose $?

They don't. They just handle the order for the employee through Rolex.

Hmmm i should apply for a job part time to one of the dealers around here (my ad is too small to hire anyone) and then get an 18K GMT and quit.

Yes, it is the AD cost minus 20%. I wasnt sure what the AD cost was, but 40% seems about right.

The AD guy I spoke to says an employee paid around $4200 for a spanking new Sub C. Maybe that is with shipping, taxes, etc.

Just to bring this one in for a safe landing that would be dealer cost less 20% ... and then sales tax added, right?

If so, someone get me a job and order that 116509 with a slate dial please.

I heard Mayor's gives an employee 50% off retail on any Rolex after working there for 2 years.

That is right. And yes, the AD I am referring o is Mayors. And 50% isn't exactly accurate. Welshwatchman's formula is stated perfectly.

One of my friends works in an AD and is unable to offer crazy discounts... It seems as though special circumstances are handled by the store manager" scratches, one-offs, etc).

He can offer a discount, but it isn't anything I would write home about.

That sounds like something offered by the store itself as a perk to a 2-year employee, not a Rolex sponsored promotion. Great deal none-the-less.
