Oklahoma Earthquake!

Last night's 5.6 quake was the strongest ever recorded in the state's history, and trumped Friday's 4.7. It was an amazing experience! I think some of the cracks in our old home's plaster walls got a little larger, and I had to straighten our framed pictures, but otherwise all is well barring the scared kids.

Did anyone else feel it?

I imagine those of you used to quakes are at us Oklahomans.

Glad to hear your Ok Lisa.

I remember waking up to a quake one Sunday morning in California. I thought it was after effects from a party I went to the previous night. Weird feeling for sure.

Lisa good to see you are well. I survived a number of quakes while I was in Greece. One in 81/82 around 6.8 and I was around 8 years old, during the night time, living on the 5th floor of a 6 storey building. I never felt so many after shocks, however survived it. If I was left asleep 5 minutes longer, I would had been dead as my room had a wall unit from wall to wall on the opposite side of my bed full of glasses and that had smashed everywhere.
The latest was last year, It was around 6am, I was waken up by a 5.4 visiting some family. I thought it was my nephew waking me up to go fishing, however, when I saw the light moving I turned the tv on and found that the quake was in Kalamata region and we felt it just outside Athens.

Very scary.

I checked the local news and there was some damage, closer to the epicenter 40 miles away. One home's chimney collapsed and caved in part of their ceiling. Yikes.

Scary stories, John.

At least with tornadoes there's some predictability.... but can you really predict the intensity or timing of an earthquake?

If the quake was deep, thats a blessing. If it was on the surface, it could have been a disaster. I hope no casualties.

Systems exist to predict earthquakes, its just they are not everywhere. I know for a fact in parts of Greece they do as they are in dangerous zone.

This quake, and Friday's, were reported at 3 km deep. Pretty shallow. I don't know whether we have equipment in place to enable better prediction of future quakes, but I did read that there has been a significant increase in seismic activity in Oklahoma starting last year, for unknown reasons.

Lets hope they place earthquake prediction equipment so they can at least alert the citizens! People need to be alerted so at least they can make themselves safer somehow.

Some friends living in Frisco, Texas said that they felt it. I was in uptown Dallas at the time so I didn't feel anything. Glad to hear that you're safe Lisa.

I was watching OSU football game and it happened towards end of game...
I guess it was close to Stillwater? I took a bunch of geology classes when I was in school at OSU....i dont ever remember any classes about active fault zones in that area?

Greg, the Oklahoma Geological Survey reported that all of our quakes over the weekend occurred at the Wilzetta fault, also called the Seminole uplift. That's all I know! And yes, they would have been close enough to Stillwater to shake up that town quite a bit.

Lisa, I thought about you when I heard about the Oklahoma quake. Glad you're OK and no more damage than a couple of cracks.

We had our 5.8 quake in August. I saw and felt our office building sway. I'm on the 8th floor. Once I realized we were not under attack I knew what it was.

I hope your mobile lines did not suffer as much of an overload as ours did. I couldn't get a call out for about 30 minutes. I finally texted my wife - that got through.

Ed, being on the 8th floor must have been worrisome. Did you try to get out, or just stay put?

The 5.8 quake was in D.C.? Is that area known to have them?

Here, I don't think there was any disruption in services of any kind.

I went through a tremor at Camp Pendleton in 1968. It didn't last long, but it scared the bejezuz out of me.

I was on the mess deck at Las Pulgas that had been cleared for cleanup and the deck was undulating in a manner akin to water. There was a lot of noise from things rattling and cups falling to the deck.

This event probably didn't even make the evening news and there was no structural damage on the base and certainly no injuries.

However, to an 18 year old kid from Louisiana it was a major event.

It's all relative.

Californians laugh at small quakes, but many are befuddled if an inch of snow hits the ground long enough to stick.

We were forced to evacuate the building while the engineers checked to make sure it was structurally sound. There were no problems so we were allowed back after about 30 minutes of standing around outside across the street.

D.C. is not a quake prone area. The epicenter was somewhere in south central VA but it was felt as far north as Ottawa.

We did have a small 5.4 quake in July 2010. The epicenter was in Gaithersburg, MD, about 10 miles from my house. It hit about 5:00 AM and woke me up. Just a bang and a mild shaking. No real damage.

The earth may be moving more these days. Maybe the big CA one is coming soon.

That's something to think about... Oklahoma used to average 50 quakes a year (not even felt by most of the population); then in 2009 that number jumped to more than a thousand.

I'd like to do more reading on the subject - the fault line that caused our quakes over the weekend is considered a "new" fault. Not sure what that means, or how new faults are formed.

I got a bit scared when I read that title Lisa! I was about to let your family live in my basement but now I'm glad I won't have to move my guitars to the garage!

Seriously, I'm glad the damages to your house weren't serious and, most importantly, that everybody is fine! I never personally experienced an earthquake but I remember there were two here in Montreal a couple of years ago and the two times I slept trough them. Now we'll have to find out if they were very light earthquakes or if my biological father is a bear...

Relieved to hear you and yours are fine, L.

We had part of that odd August East Coast quake, reaching even out into Ohio. It was absolutely bizarre to experience it, since we're not earthquake land.

Stay safe!
