New SS GMTII Box - is it unique?
I'm set to pick-up a new SS GMTII later today. My AD tells me he's only got the watch, certificate and manual. While the box will be available after a few more weeks (don't know why).
Rather than wait for this box he has offered to give me another box (a regular Rolex steel sports green box) or if I prefer just wait for the new SS GMTII box to arrive. Is the box of the new SS GMTII any different from the vanilla green box of Rolex sports watches? Appreciate any inputs from those who have bought the new GMTII. Thanks. |

I think the new plastic green ripple top box is generic in design for the sports model Rolex watches.
However, the white sleeve which goes over the outer box might have some watch specific printing, now sure if this is the case in all countries, but I do think it exists in some. My new GMT ceramic SS didn't have any printing on the outer box or sleeve. |

Not sure I follow about the outer box and sleeve... so in addition to the generic green inner box there is also an outer box?

Yes that's 'correct there is a pale lime green cardboard outer box, then sliding over the top of that there is a white cardboard sleeve
So: 1. Inner box (green plastic with ripple top); 2. Outer cardboard box (pale green); 3. Outer cardboard sleeve (fits over/around box No.2) |

I'd wait for the original box just to make it a complete combination. Although it is a bit peculiar not having the correct boxes for the watch.

No difference to the boxes between the new GMT and any other sports model.

Very odd that your AD does not have the boxes that came with the watch.

I've checked with another reputable AD in the country and they are in the same boat - no boxes yet for the 116710. I guess it's a shipment issue.
Really if the new SS GMTII box is just the same as the other Rolex sports model boxes then it's a non-issue as i'll be getting something identical. Hopefully someone here can confirm this. |

Nothing odd about that. The box first has to be made in Taiwan. They are doing back-orders since they are busy.

Well i've searched the net for all 116710 box pics and they all point to the same Rolex green-style box. Most refer to it as a "new-style" box.. so I assume there has been some recent change in box style. Anyway when I pick up the watch later today I should be able to compare whatever box they give me with those pics.

yeah it's the same box....
i suggest you take his offer of the normal green box and get him to inform you when the correct outer sleeve arrives (there will be a sticker showing 116710)

You are going to do a great purchase and you are not going to regret it . IMHO it is a bit odd that the AD has the watch but not the box.

Watch comes with box and certificate directly from Rolex. Did he say why he doesn't have the box? seems odd to me

I actually ended up deferring the purchase, last minute I felt guilty of buying under the new hype pressure of the GMTII whilst prices were still on the premium. I'm still planning to get one later this year when discount levels for the new SS GMTII drops to normal level.

Don't hate me guys, but the SS GMT II is not a "50th Anniversary model." Neither is the TT version, or the YG black dial version.
Per Rolex the only "50th Anniversary version" of the GMT II is the YG Green dial version. |

The Green Dial version is super nice as well!!!!! Saw one in Bangkok, if I would have had an extra $20,000 it would be on my wrist!

That was the impression I got from the local ADs. Yes right now they are still hard to get but I think this will completely change after a month or two.

Hmmm......well Rolex are supposedly struggling to keep up with demand and even the US dealers have been told NOT to give the regular 5% discount to ANYONE. I went to three major dealers in Sydney before (by pure, dumb luck) the store manager arrived with some new stock and he had ONE SS ceramic. To think I was one minute from handing my hard earned over for an '06 model. Not that there's anything wrong with those but when I put the ceramic on my wrist it literally screamed at me to buy it!

Thanks for this KansaiVet. I'd obviously gotten the wrong impression.
