Perceptions can change, and it is happening again right now. China, which is rapidly becoming by far the most important watch market in the world, regards Omega as a superior brand to Rolex. It'll take some time to shift some of the remaining misconceptions about Omega (i.e. that they're inferior) here in the West, but I believe there will be a rebalancing of the market. Rolex do have a very big advantage with brand perception, and they do have a strong model line up right now, but Omega are very much snapping at Rolex's heels
Not sure about that..

Ashley has made some good points - the Planet Ocean is a superb diver's watch, as is the Sub. It is mainly down to personal preference - I personally think that the Planet Ocean just pips it. I, too, like the matte bezel, it gives the watch more of a "tool" feel to it. Other little details, like the contrast lume on the minute hand and bezel pip, the lume on the date, the sapphire caseback, and, of course, the cal. 8500. If you compare the two on paper, the Planet Ocean is superior - double water resistance, double the guarantee, and a movement that is arguably the finest mass-produced movement available today. Yet, as with anything, it is more the decision of the heart rather than the head.

For me, the Sub C was a much needed evolution of the Submariner, and I still think the Glidelock clasp is a joy to behold. But, if it were my money on the table, it would be the Planet Ocean I'd be spending it on

Great points here. On paper the PO is arguably superior. "In the metal", however, is really up to personal preference. Both are fine timepieces.

I voted with my wallet and went with the Sub-C.

Maybe under the movement aspect! i agree that the 8500 is a great caliber, but it's new. We must wait before say something more!

I chose the Omega Liquidmetal LE over the sub. I've turned down several offers over MSRP for it. I recently had to choose between my grail Sea-Dweller and the PO and kept the PO.

BTW, Omega did not copy the Rolex ceramic but rather used the ceramic technology developed by it's Swatch Group sibling, Rado, long before Rolex thought about it. And IMO, the Omega ceramic bezel is a superior design to the Rolex.

As for the new 8500 PO, I will again choose my 2500 PO LM. Admittedly, the new 8500 movement is state of the art horology but having owned a PloProf and two Aqua Terras with the new movement, I will pass on the 2011 POs. The thick case required by the new movement is a deal killer for me.

I've owned seven Omegas with the 2500 movement and all have been rock solid and every bit as accurate as any of my Rolex watches and my cal 8500 Omegas.

So I'll be keeping my black beauty:

Omega is just to pop culture-ish to me. Way too many models and options.

I think the market speaks for itself as well.

I buy lots of watches across my counter, and the vast majority of older Omegas( 60's and 70s') are almost throw away. I chop up 10-15 Gold Omegas for scrap a month. Rolex is a completely different story.

Why a need for debate they both make great watches and with the new Omega caliber they step up in class and prices to mimic Rolex so now it all depends on the preference of the buyer which way to hand over the money.

Exactly. Why do have these constant threads about this vs. that or how much is it worth?Does anybody buy a watch because they like it anymore??

I do, I do...but then I end up flipping it because I find another I like even better and just can't justify having too much cash tied up in watches (Note: I used the words "too much"...I use to think a couple watches would be enough...but that quickly became a pointless battle to try and fight so I simply redefined the appropriate amount of $ that goes into the watch funds). Only problem is the Mrs. and I just can't seem to agree on what that watch fund budget should be.

Usually the recurring Rolex v Omega threads are just annoying. This one is hysterical. Thanks, guys!

I own a Sub and a PO 2500 cal. I love my Sub. But to be very honest, I wear my PO EVERYDAY. It takes all the beating and it always survives plus it is a VERY solid piece. Extremely accurate movement, very high quality bracelet and rubber strap. A true tool watch in the modern world. Great value for the money and it will last just as long as a Sub. Just my

One company pays to be in Bond movies, the other doesn't. ;-)

I like the new PO well enough, but wouldn't trade it for my SubC any day of the week. The HE valve at 10 o'clock breaks the balance and the cal 8500 makes the watch a bit too thick for my taste.

If I'm buying any Omega it will be the Ploprof 1200.

There is no doubt that both company make great watches and each has it's own proud history.

Personally I like the Rolex's quality and feel better when I handle the pieces, that's my personal preference.

In China and most of Asia, Rolex is considered a "superior" brand and Omega is very popular as well.

Sub OR. PO>>>

I'd probably go with the Sub C. The 8500 series does not have a quick set date, which would give the Sub the nod.

Also, the Rolex has an adjustable clasp. Two winning points.

They have copied the ceramic bezel.. I didn't appreciated that.
I think the liquidmetal was a more personal and innovative choice. Why do they have to copy Rolex's way???
But we know, Omega is just the follower, Rolex is the ruler!
Whay do you think about that?
OK, who left the back door open again?

OK, I'll bite
I have a metal bezel sub and a PO, I certainly would never refer to one as a better watch than the other.

Quality is great on both, though probably even better on the PO.

But, to me, it comes down to looks....PO Black Bezel Orange Numerals for me. To me, the PO is way better looking -- sharper and more distinctive than the Subs. Love the dark grey bezel for the vintage feel, "coppery" raised numerals, slightly domed crystal, and slender twisty lugs.

I think both PO and SUB are awesome watches which is why I own both. I am glad I never had to choose one over the other. I wear the sub to work because it is lighter and smaller, and I wer the PO on weekends.

Buy a Sub and a PO brand new.
Wear each for a day.
Then list them for sale.
See what you can get in return for each.

That's all I gotta say.

If watch enthusiasts forums were all about which watch is better known amongst the masses and the most revered brand with alot of it due to marketing, then forums would be a boring place. Innovation, actual quality, technology, value vs. quality, and other criteria should play a role, too. Even on a Rolex Forum.

So the most important thing when buying a watch is thinking about the resale value?

Absolutely not, but that is one of the reasons why "I" buy and collect Rolex's.

They are beautiful, and they hold their value when you want to trade or sell em.

I get bored of watches easily. =)

If you bought the Liquid Metal PO, you'd lose more money on the Sub than the PO... you know that right?

Actually I didn't know that. I don't even know what a liquid metal PO is. All I do know is I see all sorts of pre-owned PO variants for sale cheap! lol

I'm just a big submariner fan and have sold and traded some in the past and they've always held their value.
