Welcome to TRF!

For an "every day beater" I would suggest you go for the Sub Date. It is a beautifull classic, perhaps THE classic icon of ALL Rolex watches.

If you want something more "special", I would go for the SD, but it does not suit every wrist, being a rather big watch.

The ceramic bezel is the new kind of bezel that you would see on the new GMT II. As the name suggests, it is made of ceramic and is virtually scratch proof.

The numbers on the TT are applied with PVD gold dust, and the numbers on the "one tone" is applied with Platinum PVD.

NO one but Rolex knows IF and WHEN there will be a "New Submariner", so I would just go for the Sub or SD now. Carpe diem!, as they say.

Here is a pic of the SS GMT II "LN" (Lunette Noir), Ref. 116710:

I found some nice "SD versus Sub" links for you.

It is from a German forum, so you'd have to read German, but there are many nice pics:

Great choice atom! You won't be dissapointed with the 16610, but as you can see, I'm a little biased. Keep us updated?

I recommend the Sea-Dweller because it is both a true classic plus it's more rugged.

Seriously, go to an AD, try them both on at least a few times and compare. Both are great watches so you can't go wrong. The SD is heavier and sits higher on your wrist, but once you get used to that other watches tend to feel light and look thin.

If you decide to wait until next year you're flirting with a possible price increase in the meantime. That's not necessarily a reason to buy now but it's something to keep in mind.

Have fun! Nothing like deciding which watch is right for you.

Atom,

Either watch would be a great choice..

But don't follow the line that the SD is more "rugged" than the Sub....I believe that it is simply not true.

They both have the same movement inside....The SD is just a bit thicker in places to be able to withstand more depth pressure in the ocean. If you smack it against a car door, the movement will be subjected to the identical force, regardless..

It's a matter of personal taste, so get the one you want, not the one some else says you want.....

You will find advocates of either one.....Try both on and watch your wrist for a while.....One of them will look better to you.

If you want ruggedness, either sub or SD will be a fine choice, but don't get one that has gold as gold is softer than steel.

SS = Stainless Steel
TT = Two Tone = Stainless Stell + 18 kt. gold combination.

"Black one WITH Date" could be either the SS Sub Date (Model (ref) number 16610) OR the TT Sub Date (Ref. number 16613).

"Black WITHOUT date" is the Sub OP (Oyster Perpetual) non COSC (= Contróle Officielle Swisse de Chronometres: a CHRONOMETER) OR the new Sub without date but WITH a COSC certification (both have ref. # 14060).

What I also like about the new GMT is the THICKNESS of it

It almost looks as thick as the SD (and that is one of the main reasons why I love the SD - apart from it not having the cyclops).

Don't listen to Bo as he has lost the plot completely.

How can you take advice from someone who has had so many Subs and SD's.

Try them both on and feel the force.

Then buy the SD.

Yes, it is.

But don't be TOO focused on COSC certification. IMHO, COSC certification is more marketing hype than an indicator of the precision of a watch.

Almost ANY modern automatic watch can be adjusted to run within COSC specifications which are MINUS 4 to PLUS 6 secs/day.

did you know that when a rolex movement is sent off to COSC they only attach plastic hands? The real ones get stuck on before the watch is shipped off to the AD.....
