(If you're looking for an investment you should probably not be buying watches unless you don't mind a lot of risk.)

Great advice here! You'll always pay a lot when you go to an AD and you'll notice the same thing you notice when you buy a car: it loses some of its value as soon as you get out of the store!

However, let's not forget that it's never overpriced if you're willing to buy it!

If you want the pride of being the first owner, buy new. If you want to make a profit (or, at least, not lose money) buy used every time.

bought my DSSD & Hulk new but with great discounts thrown in (fortunately), wasn't much to be had on the pre-owned market at the time so didn't really have much choice but as i've no intentions of selling it's not an issue for me but, given the choice i'll always buy pre-owned on certain items & let the first guy take the hit.....there's gold in them there hills

Stick with the stocks...rolex or any watch for that matter, is all overpriced...its meant to be!they are luxury goods and hold only sentimental value...which to most is priceless, but as an investment? Never! Is a brand new BMW an investment?

on retail level anything on a leather band is wayyyy over priced especially say a wg daytona on strap its resale value is about half of retail. the SS sport models retail on not horribly offensive but still high. your best bet is buying used. good luck.

I did bought SubC in dubai in march, just before proces go up. I recaived 10% discount. Now the same watch in my country in AD is priced 20% more then i payed. I guess i would be able to sell it at least the same price which i've payed.

Now i'm going to buy SS Daytona at AD with 30% discout (its complicated why, but its official AD :) and i would be able to sell at least at AD regular price on aftermarket - pure profit :)

Also - its bett spend money on watch then on holidays and restaurant, but of course in more cases its not so good as onther investment options.

I would disagree that watch is like bmw. Maybe, but not rolexes, especialy the most popular (daytona, subc etc.) i think you always will be able to sell it near to your buy price.

i bought my Milgauss GV brand new from an AD at a price people are selling used. Have to buy right!!!

All is overpriced especially precious metal watches. Biggest drop if purchased new.

If I take the question from the OP in a different way then it could mean what is relatively a good buy/poor buy.

A sample answer might be that an Explorer might be had cheaper than say a GMT due to popularity, but with similar function.

On the other hand it seems any two tone watch is over priced compared to demand and resale etc relative to a stainless version. Case in point, I believe I have seen a two tone watch sell for less that its SS counterpart due to poor demand.

as everyone says its about love, but in a case of financial difficulty loosing 50-65% of what you paid for the watch if you need to sell is not love as opposed to making a wise investment in a piece easy to resell where you lose 0-15% thats a better scenario so you always should have in the back of your mind "is this a reasonable price or investment" when buying a watch. either way good luck!

Some people do not get this. I try to have an overarching theme regarding decisions that I make involving money: try to lose as little of it as possible. I love watches as much as the next guy/gal, but I have more peace about my watch buying decisions when I can reduce depreciation risk. My enjoyment will be higher knowing that I have been financially responsible.

In general I have always thought that daytonas are way over priced, I really like them but I never could see the reason for the the crazy prices!

I have a 116610ln and some other less expensive random watches. I am all about being diversified and mutual funds. I was just wanting to know if some watches are selling low right now to see if I want to pick one up for personal use.

I would agree with you when looking at the prices of the SS models. However, the two tone models are very undervalued at this point, imho.

Don't understand all the comments about loosing value on Rolex. From what I have seen here the resellers are charging almost as much as I paid from an AD for my new GMT II C.
As far as I can see a 10 yr old Rolex appreciates rather than depreciates. More than I can say for the average Mutual fund purchased in the last 10 yrs or any auto I have ever purchased.
Ps kicking myself that I did not purchase a mint factory serviced 2 yr warranteed 50th anniversary green sub at my AD for 4995$ just before Christmas.

I bought mine new for much less than people are currently selling used. How on earth did that happen?
