I have a V series explorer 2 white dial, its new in box and I dont really want to get the back open. Does it have a 3185 or 3186 movement? or could it be either? thanks

could be either old son - but as it's a V it's most probably a 3186
what number comes after the V? my Exp 2 is a V4 and it has the 3186 movement

Engraved rehaut and credit card format warranty document, it's most probably a 3186. The way to be sure is the so called "crown test" Crown in second position, when you make it do exactly one turn, if the hour hand jumps 5/6 hours it's a 3185 , if 8/9 jumps it's a 3186. (just look at the crown engraved on the crown to be sure you do one exact turn). |

the crown test is the way to go, yes. i don't think whether it has the engraved rehaut and credit card helps......i think the 3186 started with the M's (some had it, some didn't). |

The Crown Method Another method for discerning a 3185 with the 3186 movement is through the the Crown Rotation Method. This method is another way to discern the type of movement without having to remove the caseback. Because the calendar and hour-hand setting mechanism was redesigned in the 3186 movement, the number of turns of the crown to turn the 12 hour hand is different on a 3186 than it is on a 3185. To perform this test, unscrew the crown such that the crown is in the hand setting position. With the crown face-up, count how many hours the hour-hand travels with one full revolution of the winding crown. ■3185: one complete crown revolution makes the hour hand jumps 6 timezones/hours ■3186: one complete crown revolution equals 8-9 timezones/hours |

3186 and those 2 characteristics started nearly at the same time for explorer 2 models, at the end of 2007. My guess is that it started at the end of Z series. So, some Z, all M,V,G and Random models have 3186 inside. |
