My second Rolex, buy this one?

Hi,

I am happy Rolex owner (Explorer I, 2011) and I am now looking to expand my collection, well double.

This would be my first vintage purchase and I seek advice whether it is a good deal or not. The watch (Oysterdate) is said to be from 1961 with one owner in total. The original bracelet is not included and the seller claims that the black dial is rare for this model. The price would be roughly 2000 USD or 1450 EUR.

Does it sound like an OK deal given that the watch is fully functional? My idea is to wear it with a nato strap.

I'm no expert, but if this is a 34mm Rolex, I would expect to pay about $1,200 in the US. If it's 36mm, a bit more, but $2,000 seems high. If this watch has not been serviced in the recent past, you could be looking at a $500 service in the near future. Now, you're talking about a $2,500 watch.

I am not an expert either, but I recently gave my oldest a similar watch
what appears to be like condition and it was worth about $1200 USD.

Unless the watch has some extrinsic value to you ( Dad had similar one,
etc) I'd be tempted to negotiate a better price or pass.

I'm sure that you could do better on the forum.

At this price the original bracelet should be included.
Or at least a Rolex bracelet (even if it is not original.
You can always swap

Far too expensive unless it is in perfect condition and had a recent service. I have that model, but from 1967 on a Rivet bracelet. I expect you can find one on this forum or from Andy for about $1100 or so.

Agree with the previous comments: a bit expensive without the original band.
I would invest a bit more and go for a nice vintage Datejust.

I thought the exact same thing when I looked at the watch. Unless this specific model/year has special meaning, you'll have a much larger selection of DJ's with similar features and bracelet for $2,000.
