72 1603 DJ help
So I just got a 1603 about 3 weeks ago and when I got it I had no problems with the watch until about a couple days ago. I wear the watch daily from about 8am-11pm and these past couple of days it has died over night.. I've done some searching here and I've seen people talk about winding the watch I tried but it won't wind? The crown seems hard to turn and I didn't want to put any pressure and break anything so I didnt try to wind it although the crown does turn counter clockwise in the first position. Also when I e had to set the time due to it stopping when I go and lock the crown I hear a cracking noise? The previous owner said it was serviced late last year? (curious to know if it's still under warranty for a year since it was just serviced) But when I got it I did not recive a warranty card so should I contact him? Or just take it to an AD/ watchmaker who can check it out, sorry for the long post but I'm a noob!
Any input will help! Thanks! |

Don't ... I repeat.... don't overturn it.
The handwinding part from the stem upto the mainspring can be checked rather easy by any watchmaker. There's a slight chance there is a mainspring problem. Any good watchsmith can service a Rolex watch but it's become rathet difficult to obtain parts though a mainspring shouldn't be to hard. Jack

You can also wind the watch with the rotor , face of the watch down to the ground (while holding it) and move it around elliptical.

I would contact the seller and find out who serviced it and then approach them to ask if they would do the repair under their warranty. As mentioned, if it is a mainspring problem, any decent local watch maker should be able source the part and fix. An AD will charge a lot of money for what could be a relatively simple repair job. I would leave the watch alone until you have had it fixed.
Andy.

have it cleaned at an indep watchmaker. it should cost 350$ if no parts are required. stopping overnight is classic symptom of a dirty movement. speak to seller to see if he'll absorb some of the costs. its not worth your while to drop 800$ at a rolex service center. the watch's value does not support this kind of expense

Just an update got a call today form the watchmaker and said the reason my watch wasn't running right was because of the crown it turned out to be a replica that didn't seal good and dirt was getting in also the seal was worn.. and so on..
So it needs a new crown, case, seal, mainspring and service totaling $600.. I was upset and the watch maker told me to call the previous owner and find out what really happened and work something out. I emailed the guy and he was skeptical because he said the watch was serviced at rolex late last year? Any ways he was nice enough to take the tab and pay for the repairs all n all I got lucky and glad to see sellers back up thier merchandise! So yes it's getting repaired right now and i can't wait to get it back soon |

ok so here is the crown before it was replaced it was a "replica" which was causing the problems.
and here is the authentic crown after replacement (big difference in detail) my only complaint is the case before i droped off the watch it was nice and shinny and now after the service theres those scratched/brushed marks on both sides im sure its an easy fix but wasnt really expeting this from a jeweler.. one thing that was nice about the repairs was that it only took 3 days..(replaced crown, tube, seal, mainspring and a service as well) so far no problems but yeah take a look at the pictures here is a link to my first post on the general section and there are some good detailed pictures of the watch it self http://rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=218425 |
