What is it about watches ?
Ok, I've been on many forums over the years from Harley's to wine, I've owned muscle/classic cars, tons of motorcycles, sport collectibles, art, BMW's, Porsche's and met many fanatics in every category
But, the people on this forum are the most dedicated, passionate and informed bunch that I have ever had the pleasure of knowing and it's not even close...well maybe the corvette guys What is it about watches |

Well they give time...and we wear them...and they look nice...
...Did I say they give time? I think I'm just amazed with time itself, it runs its course and you have no choice but to be dependant of it every single day of your life and wearing my watch is the link between that time and me. I could also add all the craftmanship, the hard work and the intelligence of all the people who work together to put such movements up but I think the very base of my passion goes deeper in my mind than just having a watch, whether it has 17 jewels or 122. EDIT: Then again I don't own a Corvette so...

I don't know what it is really...Especially Rolex is intresting with the combination of excellent building quality with history and cultural impact. Outside watches I'm not interested in collections or any sort of luxery items, culture in general interests me more.

Like you John I've been around most of the same collector/enthusiast blocks and would agree that this ones different. The best way I can describe it for me is that watch collecting seem more personal. You wear them versus drive, ride, pilot etc other mechanical wonders. They go everywhere with you. It's just part of you. A more personal relationship. Does any of this make sense? Oh well.

For me it's all personal... Each timepiece I add has a story behind it... The gears subliminally started spinning when my Mom purchased a Mickey Mouse Lorus watch for me when I was in the second grade... Damn do I miss that watch!

Great question. For me, I'm not sure WHAT it is. I love a substantial, great looking watch, and it represents me, my taste and style. Funny though, until 5 years ago, I had never given one iota of thought to any watch. Then one day my wife of one year said she wanted me to have a submariner because she thought it would look great on me. And so began my gradual descent into WIS madness...

On this forum it's the...
Mods that keep us all nicey-nice. And there's nothing wrong with that... I've been all those places you mentioned + several racing forums where it gets off the hook pronto...
