Two watch dilemma.

Hi all,

Long time lurker but please don't let the absence of posts mislead - my passion for Rolex burns bright and this awesome site is always a daily staple. Anyway, I have a dilemma on which I'd sincerely appreciate your thoughts.

I have a GMT IIc which seldom gets worn - despite having an office job I wanted to avoid scratching the polished bracelet and reserve the watch for evenings and weekends, so I wear a basic G-Shock for daytime wear. Also, having had a DJ stolen from my gym locker, I'm wary of having a Rolex on my person for lunch-hour gym sessions, hence the 'cheap & cheerful' option.

But this said, the situation doesn't feel right and now that I'm ready to expand my collection, I want to address the balance and find a suitable luxury piece for the demands of day-to-day life while having something in reserve for special occasions. After all, life is short and the insurance can worry about gym locker theft etc.

So...my initial thought was to keep the GMT for occasions and maybe get an IWC Aquatimer 2000 for the rigours of the office/gym. Then I started to think about the pedigree of such watches and don't know if I can gravitate away from Rolex. So the question is, what would your ideal tag-team of watches be?

I had a thought of keeping the GMT and getting a Deepsea for the grind, but that seemed like a contradiction given the relative price-points of the Deepsea/GMT. Seemed profound to have the costlier watch as a beater.

So over to you guys, anyone for the Aquatimer/GMT combo, Deepsea/GMT or maybe ditching the GMT and going off at a tangent? Feel free to suggest any combo as I'm going around in circles!!

Well I ended up getting the Explorer II for my daily beater that I also wear when I hit the gym during lunch. I got the 40mm Explorer II at a decent price and it works well as a daily beater.

Look today the only main difference in any Rolex watch is style of case,more water resistance whether S.Steel, mixed metals,precious metals/diamonds and the price.And although the polished centre links will scratch and show more than say a all brushed bracelet.All watches if worn you will get them scratched,not much point in buying a Rolex or any other watch if you don't want to get them scratched.But just cannot see why the fuss over a few normal every day wear scratches.When service time is due watch will be polished as good as to as new as possible.Only to get scratched again in normal everyday day wear Rolex watches are mean to be worn and enjoyed why worry over a few scratches.

The 116264 TOG is a favorite of mine, & the jubilee bracelet hides scratches quite well...

How about a Sub. The brushed bracelet is easy to maintain and it is very versatile. If you are looking for something a little under the radar, the 39 mm explorer is nice.

Wear the hell out of the GMT. They are meant to be worn! The scratches on the PCLs can be easily buffed out during service. Or, you can always have them brushed.

In either case, I don't get the rationale behind purchasing a $7000 watch and not wearing it.

Are you looking for something more dressy or sport?

Depending on your budget, I would look for a sporty watch to wear as my daily watch like an Omega Seamaster which can be found preowned for around $1500 USD and look great then keep the Rolex as my "nicer" watch or if you have the funds, keep the GMTc as your daily watch and look for something dressier like a Daytona or DateJust for weekends.

Lots of options but the first question is what is your budget then can go from there.

the GMT2c is a good daily watch. use it daily and get a nice two tone Rolex for evenings and weekends.

I don't have any issues wearing a GMT to the gym, but I do understand the concern that some do have..

If you want to stay in the Rolex stable, find a nice older 16700 GMT for every day wear, or a nice Explorer or Explorer II. These make great kick-about watches..

I say wear your watch whatever it may be and enjoy it ! You paid for it, life is too short and as Padi said, it will get polished at service time !!

I personally think you go with what will make you the happiest...so with that said keep your GMT and wear it daily. As for a second watch...the skies the limit and of course you sure can't go wrong buying another Rolex!!!

Exactly my friend - the GMT is going to be a keeper and a much cherised one at that - just need to figure out my next acquisition - heart says a Deepsea, head says a Daytona, wallet says the IWC!
