Where did these caseback scratches come from?

Hello,

Couple a months ago I bought myself a preowned 1,5 year old V-series Milgauss (not from original owner). The watch itself is perfect, but only thing that bothers me a bit is that there are small hairline scratches in a watches caseback and I don´t have any idea where did they come from...

As you hopefully see from these poor pictures of mine, the scratch pattern is a bit shaped like a "sandglass". So I wondered, if you might have any idea what might have caused these kind of scratches? I have couple of ideas: A) Watch winder, B) Nato strap + sand between, or C) killer armhair. Well, I know they can be buffed away, but the origin of these kind of scratches still interests me...

Do you lay the watch flat when not wearing it? If so, most likely the clasp...

I'll always put it on it's side . . . crown upwards.

So probably as mentioned in the previous posts from the bracelet / clasp.

I have also seen some NATO straps (especially if they aren't kept clean) cause scratches to the case back over time.

I disagree with the consensus here. Those are not from the clasp or bracelet.

The bracelet can't move sideways, so bracelet scuffs tend to look more straight and mechanical. And your scratches extend all the way to the sides of the caseback, where the Milgauss bracelet cannot even reach.

The caseback of my 3-year old Milgauss looks absolutely nothing like that. In fact, it looks essentially new, even though I leave resting on the clasp face up every night.

My guess is from when the watch is laid down when taken off and the bracelet has hit the back.

I agree with your opinion. My bracelet can't move sideways so that it could scratch the so widely the sides of the caseback.

That's from a nylon strap...Nato or Zulu. They'll brush right out.

If you received it from the seller with those scratches, then I believe he tried to do a quick refinish with a ScotchBrite pad or fine-grit sandpaper.

I have read the human hair has the same consistency as a copper wire of the same guage. But I doubt that was the real culprit. I imagine the bracelet was replaced with a strap and these are table scratches.
