1991 NOS Daytona

What is your opinion of a brand new 1991 Daytona that has sat on the shelf for 21 years with all original boxes,papers and tags. SS and 18kt gold with oyster bracelet and white face. What is a fair value in your opinion, and shouldn't it have a complete service after sitting so long? Model 16523. Asking price is $9,999.00 or best offer.

price seems more than fair (I would prefer SS.)
a zenith movement, i would definitely have a service, to put the grease and oil back where it belongs.
i suspect this could run you minimum of $600 but closer to $1000 for the zenith movement.

I personally wouldn't pay more than $6000.00ish (Needs servicing ect, its also TT--beautiful just not as desirable)


P.S I must just get "deals", I always feel like I'm the low-ball price guy lol.

It is a Zenith movement and I have been thinking the same ( is it possible) as many of you/ It is a Jeweler in Miami and I found it on ebay. The shop has very good feedback and many sales. I just thought it rather odd. Why was it never sold?

The jeweler may have acquired it from the original owner more recently than 1991. There have been instances where a Rolex was gifted to or won by an individual who had no desire to wear it, and just stashed it away in a closet or desk.

Ask he he gives you a service included in the sales price.
You never know if he agrees.

fyi, i bought my sub in 1991 when i couldn't get a daytona... last year i finally got my hands on a daytona and kept it for about 2 months, then sold it.
i just couldn't read the dial as easy as my sub... it was a buzz kill but i got my money back as it was a SS, these are easy to sell. selling the TT not as easy?

if its what you want, go for it.... but if you have any reservations, you may be out some cash for your adventure.

This is the first post I read about a non satisfied Daytona owner
Everybody I know is dreaming with their eyes wide open of owning one . . .
But I guess you are right . . . I never owned one . . .
Any other TRF's who have problem reading the time on their $ 10K+ watch ?

It's no special deal at $10,000

I keep hearing that white dial Daytona's are very hard to read

Don't think you will ever get a Daytona for 6k ( especially a full set).
I am not a big fan of TT Daytonas, but assuming this watch is OK, 7-8k seems pretty fair to me.

TTs come up around $7-8k. SS ones I've seen as low as $8,600 recently.

I have low vision problems and the watch that I can actually read the time is my vintage 1977 GMT Mster 1675, with the matte black dial and white hands and markers. Good contrast for me.

To the OP:
it is a fair deal, but keep in mind that you'll lose money on it as soon as you resize the watch. This particular piece is only worth more because it is NOS, but as soon as you touch it, the value will be $7,500-$8,000 as the TT Zeniths are worth considerably less than the ss ones. They simply aren't as popular or in the same demand.

On the Daytona topic:
There are plenty of people who have bought and then sold the Daytonas. They possess a special place in Rolex and watch history, but many people, including myself, simply find the dial too cluttered and time too hard to tell. The lack of date doesn't help, nor does the polished center links.

I've both the 16520 and the 116520, I really wanted to love them but alas it wasn't for me.

you'll find a lot of folks have a hard time seeing this dial the hands catch and reflect light which makes them hard to see and the lume is but a thin strip, the hands on the zenith are also thinner than the newer daytonas (the new 116520 started with thin hands and switched midway) there are also debates over which dials are harder to see specifically black vs white... zenith in white was said to be more visible than black.

it is an iconic watch and i got more compliments on my daytona in 2 months than on my sub in the last 10 years... i traded it for a LV, my girlfriend really likes the green in my 16610LV, i have no regrets here and you can save a few bucks

the only Daytona that does it for me is the 6263... but that's a personal opinion...

if you like the watch, make him a best offer but i agree with the quote that the value will drop as soon as it stops being NOS

There was a 6239 Dial Double Swiss for sale on Ebay last week $ 30K . .
A guy working at the Austrian Embassy in Moscow needing the money . . .
He also had a DDII and another Rolex for sale

You can give it a shot . . . . no guts no glory . . . .

I bought a NOS 16520 last year. 1991 model, last of the matte bracelets white dial and an inverted 6. Still had all the plastic on it. Paid 14k for it and was glad to do it for a truly new watch. Winding was a little tight, but it ran great. Because it was a Mark III it was rare, hence the price. Never regretted it. Hope this helps.

$8,500, or so, would be a good price for a well used, tt Daytona from the early to mid 90's. A completely unused version is a different matter. IMO, $9,000+ is an OK price if you want this exact watch.

TT are mostly a little cheaper
But . . . . they are harder to resell.
And . . . I like them not that much . . .
A Sub TT is OK for me but the Daytona . . . maybe it needs to grow on me ?
