Just putting out feelers on larger "GOLD" Watches

I wear a SS GMT IIC. When ever I am out I see Women and men wearing the GOLD Michael Kors or some close to it. You all know the 44-46MM oversized watches. Does anyone see this trend fading or do think brands like Rolex, Cartier, AP will follow this trend and make larger and bolder watches? Just looking for opinions.

I think that the watches the OP is talking about is a trend that will fade. I also think the more common watch size of 40mm to 42mm is here to stay.

I wonder though if you do own say a gold Rolex, AP, etc.. Does it get under their skin. I only have SS watches.

My wife wears my 1978 Gold Shell Tudor Prince Oysterdate (on its original gold shell oyster bracelet with rolex crown and clasp). I hope that look doesn't ever fade because it looks great on her!

Truth be told, she does have one of the giant Michael Kors (sp?) watches, but it never seems to see the light of day since I gave her the Tudor....

I see those type of watches a lot while at work. Especially those awful gaudy no name brands you can buy in the middle kiosk at the mall. I think the brands such as Rolex, AP, PP and other high end brands will continue to make what they have been, seens to be working (and looking) just fine to me.

I think that bigger than 40mm watches will never fade. For some people smaller watches are annoying (I think 40mm is the least I can do, I would really like a bigger watch for visibility first of all).
High-end watch manufacturers do make larger than 40mm watches. Jaeger LeCoultre does them (they even go 46mm at times), Audemars Piguet also (all the ROO are at least 42mm from memory), even Breguet has larger than 40mm watches.

I think sizing depends on the watch. My Panerai suits its case at 44mm. My Breitlings suit their 44mm cases. My Rolex is a 40mm.
I love wearing them all, however I will say I find the Sub a little small. Truth be told, I would actually like to see a 42mm Sub......

But 44mm is my limit. I can't pull anything bigger off and if I can't read the dial on a 44mm watch, it's time to give up.

Larger watches are not a fad but a trend which is different IMHO.

"Though the term trend may be used interchangeably with fad, a fad is generally considered a fleeting behavior whereas a trend is considered to be a behavior that evolves into a relatively permanent change."

There is no question larger watches (42mm+) are here to stay. It's already been over 5 years of them trending larger so I don't see this ending or reversing anytime soon.

One thing I've noticed today: hipsters like large watches.

One thing to notice among people is that many prefer large watches and people that don't know anything about watches, especially young people, tend to prefer them bigger and flashier

Connoisseurs see past that and quickly dismiss both the people and the watches, but for an average Joe/Jane a watch is bought on totally different criteria.

Michael Kors makes FASHION watches, meaning they are just that...fashion pieces. Their styles come in almost as fast as they go out. It's why they're relatively inexpensive, compared to Rolex at least. Rolex designs are classic, but even they recognize movement in terms of style when the see it, hence the 41mmDJ's and DD's, not to mention the 42mm EXPII's and the new Sky Dweller. Larger watches are here to stay, but 44mm+...I think those are just a fad...

Hi all, new to the forum, though I have had my TT sub for about 15 years. It was, is and always will be a classic, I believe. Now I'm looking at the DSSD and think the size is part of the appeal to many. As to the future of large watches, I think it's difficult to tell. Companies like Invicta and Android appear to be thriving, and the 47-52 mm sizes are huge sellers for them. As always with fashion there will be some ebb and flow but I suspect the big watch trend will continue for awhile.

I agree that the fashionable larger watches are popular now but it won't last. The 36-42mm range I feel is here to stay.

Actually the large fashion "flash" watches are out dated already. The trad clothing guys have already ventured into wearing small vintage watches on NATO straps now. I hope J.Crew doesn't get on this and doesn't manipulate the secondary market on watches now. I hate fashion and their magazine propaganda, it's aimed towards mindless sheep.

I think the "fad" is here to stay. Rolex branched out with the DSSD and I think they see the rewards. However, Rolex will continue to stay mostly conservative yet try to continue to bring new blood into the brand. From what I have read here, Rolex is slowly creeping up, angering some and pleasing others.

sadly bigger watches ARE here to stay...as in 40mm+ ones, i still would prefer a 36mm DJ when wearing to formal occasion or for interviews, but for everyday wear, i see alot more 40mm++......even rolex 40mm subs/gmts wear like 42mm since they have the bigger lugs and with the new 41mm DJ/DD, 42mm skydweller and HUGE yatchmaster II/DSSD....the upward trend of bigger watches isnt one that fades

additionally as much as i would like for smaller watches to come back, its a little difficult for the trend to come back down to a conservative 36mm when the minimum size of new watches that come out are 40mm+ =(

I think its a fad, much like the white or black totally ceramic watches that were and to some extent still are popular. As soon as the batteries run out on some of those watches people will shelve them for whatever the new popular style is.

Not sure how people think big watches are a fad. I don't see that at all. Panerai has been selling 47mm watches for 9 decades now and that's anything but a fad. It is an option whether one likes it or not. I happen to love diversity in a collection and can appreciate all sizes from 36mm on up. It is nice to have options and choose freely--whatever works for you but let's be factual big watches have been with us for years and aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

J.Crew has been selling NATO straps and "vintage" watches for quite some time (like 3 years or more).

I've been seeing more and more "stylish" younger people wearing older 36mm SS or gold Datejusts on a jubilee. The "retro cool" seems to be changing...which shouldn't be much of a surprise.
